LAREDO, Texas – The No. 3 seeded Texas A&M International University visited the top-seeded and host of this weekend's Heartland Conference tournament, but Monday's meeting served as the regular season finale. The match presented a potential conference tournament game – which will be played on Saturday and see the pair meet if the Hilltoppers defeat No. 4 St. Mary's and if the Dustdevils down No. 2 Dallas Baptist.
On Monday, the hosts bested the Dustdevils, 2-0. The tournament kicks off on Thursday with the semifinals.
It was a pair of second half strikes – including a penalty kick just five minutes from the final whistle – that edged the Dustdevils. As a team, TAMIU took just one shot on goal, while goalkeeper Chelsea Knaack helped keep the match within reach with two saves.
St. Edward's scored in the 65th minute before the 85th minute spot kick.
TAMIU will return to Austin for its second appearance in the postseason tournament on Thursday. The No. 1 versus No. 2 match will initiate the action at noon before TAMIU faces Dallas Baptist at 2:30 p.m. The championship match will feature the two winners from the semifinals on Saturday at noon.
