Box Score 2 LAREDO, Texas – Opening Day at Jorge Haynes Field on the campus of Texas A&M International saw a little bit of everything as the Dustdevils hosted Southeastern Oklahoma State for a doubleheader. The Dustdevils walked off to victory in the first game, 5-4, and swept the doubleheader by sailing to a 6-1 victory in game 2.
"We battled all day and played better as the day went on," TAMIU head coach Chad Porter said. "I'm pleased with our effort and we need the same in the final game of the series."
The two teams will face off on Sunday at 12 p.m. as TAMIU (2-0) looks for a series sweep.
GAME 1: TAMIU 5, SEOSU 4
Dustdevils starting pitcher Jeremy Gonzalez, a junior from Corpus Christi, Texas, threw five innings – giving up only five hits while allowing four earned runs with five strikeouts and two walks. His effort rendered a no decision though, as reliever Garrett Taggart (1-0) earned the victory by hurling the final two innings.
Taggart, a junior from Tempe, Ariz., threw a no-hit effort while allowing no runs and striking out one.
The hero of the afternoon was senior catcher Alex McKeon, who batted into a fielder's choice with the score tied at 4 with the bases loaded in the final inning. A throwing error by losing pitcher Nick Johnson (0-1) allowed Dustdevils senior speedster Alvaro Rondon to slide across the plate for the victory.
Rondon, a shortstop junior college transfer from Laredo Community College, led the Dustdevils by going 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored -- including the walk-off winner. Junior right fielder Andrew Arteaga – also a LCC transfer – went 1-for-3 with a walk, a strikeout and a run scored. McKeon, Connor Belvin, Jake Cardoza and Arturo Castro Jr. also went 1-for-3. McKeon and Belvin each knocked in a run and Castro scored once.
Arteaga and Belvin each belted doubles, while sophomore third baseman Mauricio Granados – a LCC transfer and Laredo native – knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly.
The Dustdevils scored twice in the first and third innings and the deciding run in the seventh inning.
GAME 2: TAMIU 6, SEOSU 1
Granados' 3-for-5 and two-RBI game helped give starting pitcher Abdel Rivera the victory, as he threw five innings of 1-run ball.
Rivera (1-0), a preseason All-South Central Region team member, struck out four and walked three while allowing a run.
Behind Granados, the Dustdevils saw Arteaga (3-for-5) knock in a run and score one while Belvin (1-for-5) also batted one in and scored one. Ryan Jozwiak (2-for-4), Rondon (1-for-3) and Castro (1-for-3) each scored once.
The Dustdevils burned on the basepaths as well with Rondon, Arteaga, Cardoza and Jozwiak swiping a base apiece.
SEOSU's Clay Canyon took the loss on the mound; TAMIU's Marty Bigham recorded his first save of the season.
