TAMIU Wins Marathon Match Up at Home

Dustdevils see late heroics lead way

Box Score LAREDO, Texas – Starting centerfielder Alexander Cabezas played the hero – on both defense and offense – for Texas A&M International against the University of Houston-Victoria in a marathon 14-inning affair on Tuesday at Jorge Haynes Field.

The freshman outfielder made a crow-hopping crucial catch with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the 14th inning and gunned down the Jaguars' tagging runner from third at the plate. The converted double play ended UHV's inning, keeping the game at 2-2, and eviscerated any scoring threat.

Cabezas then led off the bottom of the 14th with a slick drag bunt down the third base line, safely reaching after UHV's third baseman anticipated the ball rolling foul – but it stayed fair. Cabezas advanced to second base before Michael Colorado roped a RBI single into the outfield.

Cabezas, an Austin, Texas, native, went 1-for-5 in the game but made his mark defensively with seven putouts in centerfield.

Right fielder Andrew Arteaga led the way offensively, going 3-for-6 with a RBI, followed by Colorado's 2-for-6 day with a run scored and the game-winning RBI. Starting catcher Jonathan LaFrenz and left fielder Ryan Jozwiak eached joined Cabezas with a hit. Connor Belvin knocked a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to record a RBI.

Alvaro Rondon stole three bases, including second and third in the first inning. His swipings led to the Dustdevils' first run of the game.

It was a collaboration from the mound that led to the victory as Clay Phillip started the game but received no decision after 4 2/3 innings. He allowed just four hits while walking one and striking out three. Garrett Taggart pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief, allowing a hit and two runs while walking three. Jared Curnel pitched 5 innings with eight strike outs, walking two and allowing three hits.

Finally, Baylr Bickerton (1-0) recorded the win with 2 innings pitched, allowing a hit and recording a strike out.

The Dustdevils will return to action at Jorge Haynes Field on Feb. 7 against No. 36 Angelo State at 2 p.m. The two teams will wrap the series on Feb. 8 with a doubleheader starting at noon.
