LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International welcomed Angelo State to Jorge Haynes Field for a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday, falling in the opening game, 6-3, and then 10-1 in the finale. Since opening the season on Feb. 1, the Dustdevils have played a combined 39 innings in just four games – thanks to a 14-inning showdown against the University of Houston-Victoria on Feb. 4.

Against ASU (4-0, 0-0 Lone Star Conference) on Saturday, TAMIU (3-3, 0-0 Heartland Conference) managed just 10 hits in the 16-inning doubledip.

The two teams will play the series finale on Sunday at noon at Jorge Haynes Field.

GAME 1: Angelo State 6, TAMIU 3 (7 Innings)

Both the Dustdevils and Rams scored single runs in the first inning, but TAMIU leapt out to a 3-2 lead after plating individual runs again in the fourth and sixth innings.

That lead held up until the Rams' last chance at bat, in the seventh inning, where they scored four runs – two of which were unearned. Relief pitcher Jared Curnel (0-2) suffered the loss without recording an out against the four batters he faced.  He allowed three hits and a pair of unearned runs and earned runs before he was relieved by Marty Bigham, who closed the game with three outs against the three batters he faced –including a strikeout.

Jeremy Gonzalez started the game, going 4 2/3 innings while allowing only four hits in and two walks in 20 batters faced. He sat down six via the strikeout before Garrett Taggart stepped in for him with 1 1/3 innings of 1-hit ball pitched. Taggart also walked a man.

Offensively, the Dustdevils were led by right fielder Andrew Arteaga (2-for-4, RBI). His first inning double tied the game at 1-all, plating leadoff batter Michael Colorado – who went 1-for-3 with a run scored, a walk and a RBI.

Colorado's RBI came in the sixth inning off a single to centerfield, scoring catcher Jonathan LaFrenz.

Left fielder Ryan Jozwiak (0-for-2) knocked in Gordie Taggart in the fourth inning off a fielder's choice.

The Rams' Dillon Becker (1-0) recorded the victory in one inning pitched with a strikeout and a hit allowed.

GAME 2: Angelo State 10, TAMIU 1

The Rams got their bats singing with single runs in the first, fourth, fifth, two in the sixth and five in the eighth innings. Their 14 hits were nearly four times the Dustdevils' total of four.

TAMIU scored in the bottom of the fifth inning when short stop Mauricio Granados (1-for-3, RBI) singled to left-center field, plating Alexander Cabezas (0-for-3, R) – although the run was unearned.

Only the Dustdevils designated hitter Connor Belvin (1-for-4), Taggart (1-for-3, double) and LaFrenz (1-for-3) joined Granados with hits. Colorado and Jake Cardoza reached base with walks, but TAMIU saw the majority of its line up suffer strikeouts – 11 in total. LaFrenz and Cabezas were the only two Dustdevil batters to not strike out.

Dustdevils starter Abdel Rivera (1-1) – a 2014 All-South Central Region preseason selection – suffered the loss while going 5 1/3 innings with five strikeouts and only two walks. He allowed four runs – three earned – and eight hits.

Baylr Bickerton relieved Rivera, pitching 2 2/3 innings with a strikeout and two walks. He allowed six runs – four earned – and five hits. Clay Phillip pitched the final inning, allowing a hit.

ASU's Jake Feckley (2-0) recorded the win with six innings of four-hit ball pitched, including four strikeouts.
