LAREDO, Texas – It was a hits parade on Tuesday at Uni-Trade Stadium as Texas A&M International (9-15) swirled by Huston-Tillotson (7-23), 11-2. The Dustdevils knocked twice as many hits as the Rams at the City of Laredo's two-year old $21 million facility – which also houses the Laredo Lemurs of the American Association of Independent Baseball.
A two-run second inning kicked off the parade for the Dustdevils, but it was a five-run sixth that cemented the victory for starting pitcher Clay Phillips (1-1). He threw seven strong innings with three strike outs and three walks, allowing the Rams just four hits and one run – but it was unearned. Of the 26 batters he faced, one tapped a sacrifice bunt, nine grounded out and six flew out while he threw only 74 pitches. Baylr Bickerton threw an inning in relief with two strike outs and three hits with a run allowed. Gordie Taggart closed the game with his first outing on the mound, striking out two and silencing the Rams without a hit in an inning pitched.
After a sitting down of the Rams first six batters, TAMIU plated a pair in the second. Jake Cardoza looped a one-out double to left center field, scoring when the next batter – Arturo Castro Jr. – singled and took second on the throw to the plate. Robert Quintanilla booked a two-bagger to left center field, scoring Castro.
Both teams were quieted until TAMIU roared with a quintet of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Michael Colorado led off the frame with a full-count single to left-center field. Andrew Arteaga sat on two consecutive balls before belting a base hit to left, and designated hitter Alex McKeon eyed four balls for a walk to load the bases. Starting catcher Jonathan LaFrenz worked a full count into a base on balls, netting a RBI as Colorado crossed the plate. Castro touched a one-out safety-squeeze bunt back to the pitcher, scoring McKeon. Qunitanilla flexed his muscles again, tripling to left center to score LaFrenz. Finally, Mauricio Granados roped a RBI single to right, scoring Qunitanilla.
HTU scored its first run in the top of the seventh, but the Dustdevils answered with a trio of their own and one final run in the bottom of the eighth after a final Rams run.
McKeon launched a deep two-out double to right-center field after facing a two-strike count. Danny Benavides then batted for LaFrenz, drawing a four-pitch walk. Cardoza singled to plate McKeon and put runners on the corners for Castro to double to deep right-center for a pair of RBI.
Nathan Halas knocked a triple off the wall in right field with one out, and Colorado reached on an infield single, putting runners on the corners. Arteaga lifted a ball just deep enough into right field, allowing Halas to score on the sacrifice fly. Colorado took second on a subsequent wild pitch, but that's as far as he got.
Colorado led the lineup with a 3-for-5 day, while Cardoza (2-for-3, 2 RBI), McKeon (1-for-4), Castro (2-for-3, 4 RBI) and Quintanilla (2-for-4, 2 RBI) followed him. Halas (1-for-5) and Arteaga (1-for-4) each register hits as well.
All in all, the Dustdevils demolished six extra-base hits – led by Quintanilla's double and triple.
HTU's Anthone Luna took the loss, allowing 11 runs – 10 earned – in seven complete innings while striking out just three and walking three.
The Dustdevils will next take to the diamond on Friday against Arlington Baptist on the campus of Southeastern Oklahoma State in Durant, Okla.
