LAREDO, Texas – A pair of Heartland Conference rivals separated by only 200 miles of I-35 took to the diamond at Jorge Haynes Field for a doubleheader on Friday. Texas A&M International was swept by the visiting St. Edward's Hilltoppers, falling 6-0 and 10-3.

The Dustdevils (12-20, 4-10 Heartland) will host St. Edward's for the series finale at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Jorge Haynes Field.

GAME 1: SEU 6, TAMIU 0 (7 Innings)

Hilltoppers starter Brannon Easterling (5-4) limited the Dustdevils to just three hits – spread amongst Nathan Halas (1-for-3), Connor Belvin (1-for-3) and Jake Cardoza (1-for-2) – through his complete-game shutout.

Standing opposite to Easterling, TAMIU starter Marty Bigham (1-3) pitched four complete innings. He allowed seven hits, six runs – five earned – and a pair of walks. Clay Phillip pitched the final three innings with two strike outs, a walk and just two hits allowed. The pair combined to throw 65 strikes out of 104 total pitches.

TAMIU catcher Alex McKeon reached base after being hit by a pitch. Easterling threw 50 strikes out of his 63 total pitches.

GAME 2: SEU 10, TAMIU 3

The second game of the afternoon saw TAMIU fall into an early four-run hole, but the Dustdevils pulled within one before the first inning ended. The Hilltoppers pulled away with single runs in the second, fourth and eighth innings and they added three insurance runs in the ninth.

TAMIU's Abdel Rivera (3-4) took the loss with six innings pitched with one strike out, one walk, 10 hits allowed and six runs – four earned. Garrett Taggart pitched 2 2/3 innings with a walk, four hits allowed and four runs – three earned. Ryan Williams finished the game with 1/3 of an inning pitched, forcing an inning-ending groundout.

The Dustdevils managed four hits, but the team's five defensive errors undid its offensive work. Halas went 1-for-3 with a run scored, McKeon went 1-for-3 with a run, Belvin went 1-for-4 and Arturo Castro Jr. went 1-for-4. Andrew Arteaga scored a run after being hit by a pitch despite going 0-for-3.

The Dustdevils grounded into two double plays and stranded five runners on base. Cardoza, Halas, McKeon and Gordie Taggart each drew a walk.
