LAREDO, Texas – The conclusive game of St. Edward's and Texas A&M International's 3-game Heartland Conference series in Laredo saw 15 combined runs scored. The Hilltoppers completed the series sweep with a 14-1 victory on Saturday at Jorge Haynes Field.
With the loss, the Dustdevils fall to 12-21 (4-11 Heartland). Starting pitcher Jeremy Gonzalez (2-4) took the loss, pitching 2 1/3 innings with a strike out, two walks, five hits and five runs – four earned – allowed. Baylr Bickerton pitched 4 2/3 innings in relief, striking out three with no walks and six hits and three runs – just one earned – allowed. Jared Curnel, Armando Manrrique and Ryan Williams combined to close the game with two total innings pictched. The trio combined to allow six hits and six runs – five earned.
The Dustdevils committed six errors, leading to four unearned runs, despite the Hilltoppers 17 hits. St. Edward's pitcher Dalton Brown (5-0) struck out four in six innings of work and allowed just three hits. TAMIIU managed two more hits in the game.
Freshman catcher Danny Benavides started the game and went 2-for-3 with a RBI. Nathan Halas went 1-for-4, Arturo Castro Jr. went 1-for-2 and Ryan Jozwiak pinch hit to go 1-for-1 with a run scored. The Dustdevils left four men stranded as Alex McKeon reached off being hit by pitches twice. He also walked once, along with Michael Colorado.
The Dustdevils next face McMurry in a doubleheader on April 4 in Abilene, Texas.
