Box Score 2 LAREDO, Texas – With just six games remaining in the regular season, Texas A&M International hosted the University of Texas of the Permian Basin for the final home series of the year on Friday. The doubleheader saw the Falcons sweep the Dustdevils (14-32, 6-20 Heartland Conference), 10-4 and 8-6 at Jorge Haynes Field.
The two teams will close the season with a Senior Day celebration for TAMIU on Saturday at 12:40 p.m. The Dustdevils will honor seniors Gordie Taggart, Baylr Bickerton, Abdel Rivera, Clay Phillips and Ryan Williams before playing the third game of the series.
The Dustdevils will close their season on May 2-3 at St. Mary's in San Antonio.
GAME 1: UTPB 10, TAMIU 4 (7 Innings)
The Falcons opened the game with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning, one in the fourth and three more in the fifth before TAMIU plated its first. Despite allowing four final runs in the sixth inning, the Dustdevils flexed their muscles for three runs in the bottom of the seventh, via Andrew Arteaga's three run hammering home run.
The blast scored Mauricio Granados and Ryan Jozwiak.
In the fifth inning, Nathan Halas looped a RBI single to right-center field to plateTaggart.
Jeremy Gonzalez (3-6) took the loss after 4 2/3 innings with six hits and six runs – five earned – allowed. He struck out seven and walked two Falcons. Bickerton pitched 2/3 of an inning with three hits and four runs allowed while striking out and walking one. Williams threw 1 2/3 innings with just one hit and two strike outs.
Seven different Dustdevils recorded hits, but each only had one apiece. Halas went 1-for-3 with a RBI, Arteaga went 1-for-4 with three RBI and a run, Alex McKeon went 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base, Daniel Cruz went 1-for-3, Taggart went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored, Jake Cardoza went 1-for-3 and Ryan Jozwiak went 1-for-2 with a run and a walk.
GAME 2: OC 8, TAMIU 6
TAMIU and UTPB went blow for blow in the 3-hour second game. The Falcons opened with two runs in the first, but TAMIU answered with three. Both were silenced until UTPB scored three runs over the sixth and seventh frames, but TAMIU plated three to take the lead in the eighth. UTPB stretched to victory with three final runs in the ninth inning.
Rivera started the game for TAMIU, going six innings with three hits and three runs – just one allowed. He walked five and struck out five. Garrett Taggart didn't record an out but allowed two hits and two runs; Marty Bigham pitched 1 2/3 innings with one hit allowed, two walks and a strike out. Jared Curnel (1 ER, 1 K) and Armando Manrrique (3 H, 2 ER, K) both pitched 2/3 of an inning. Manrrique (1-4) took the loss.
Arteaga (3-for-5, R) and Cruz (3-for-3, 2 RBI, BB) led the Dustdevils offensively while Cardoza (2-for-4, R) also held multiple hits. Halas went 1-for-5 with two RBI and a double, McKeon went 1-for-5 with a run, Gordie Taggart went 1-for-5 with a run, Daniel Benavides went 1-for-4 with a RBI, Jozwiak went 1-for-2 with a walk and Connor Belvin pinch hit to go 1-for-1 with a RBI and a run.
