Box Score 2 ABILENE, Texas – Texas A&M International traveled to McMurry (15-19, 9-10 Heartland Conference) for a three-game series, starting with a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The Dustdevils dropped both contests, 6-5 and 3-1 respectively, to fall to 12-22 overall and 4-12 in Heartland play.
The teams will close the series as TAMIU tries to salvage the series with the third game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
GAME 1: McMurry 6, TAMIU 5 (7 Innings)
The Dustdevils leapt to a quick 4-0 lead with pairs of runs being scored in the second and third innings, but managed only one more run through the final four frames while allowing McMurry to plate two runs apiece in the third, sixth and seventh innings.
Jared Curnel fell to 0-4 for the Dustdevils with 1 1/3 innings pitched. He allowed three hits and two runs – one earned – in relief. Jeremy Gonzalez started the game, going five full innings with four strike outs and no walks while allowing seven hits and four runs.
The Dustdevils collected 10 hits as a team, led by Jake Cardoza's 3-for-4 outing with a RBI and a run scored. Michael Colorado went 2-for-4 with two RBI, Nathan Halas went 2-for-3 with a RBI and a walk, and Daniel Cruz went 2-for-2 with a run scored and two walks. Alex McKeon (1-for-5, R) knocked the team's other hit while Gordie Taggart walked twice and scored a run.
The scoring started for TAMIU in the second inning when Cardoza reached via a 1-out single. Cruz doubled down the left field line to put two runners in scoring position before Colorado knocked a 2-out RBI single to left field. Halas plated Cruz when he hit a RBI single up the middle.
The third inning rendered similar results, beginning when McKeon belted a leadoff double to the left-center field gap. Connor Belvin grounded out, but moved McKeon to third before Taggart walked to put runners on the corners. Cardoza fired a single down the right field line to plate McKeon. Cardoza too second on a wild pitch, putting two runners in scoring position before Cruz walked to load the bases for Ryan Jozwiak. He then flew out to left, scoring Taggart on the sacrifice.
TAMIU was silenced until the final frame. Cruz led off with a walk in the seventh, but was pinch run for by Robert Quintanilla. Jozwiak then reached on a fielder's choice that retired Quintanilla. Jozwiak stole second before Colorado singled to right center, plating Jozwiak.
GAME 2: McMurry 3, TAMIU 1
TAMIU fell into a 1-0 hole from the first inning forward, scoring its only run in the fourth inning to tie the game at 1-all. McMurry scored one run apiece in the sixth and eighth innings for the victory.
Abdel Rivera (3-5) took the Dustdevils loss, pitching the complete game with eight innings of work with two strike outs, a walk, seven hits allowed and three runs allowed.
Belvin (3-for-4, R) and Cardoza (2-for-4) were the only Dustdevils with more than one hit. Halas (1-for-4) McKeon (1-for-4), Taggart (1-for-4, RBI) and Jozwiak (1-for-3) were the only others to safely reach base with hits.
Entering the fourth down a run, Belvin singled with two outs and reached second on a catching error by McMurry's second baseman. Cardoza moved him to third with a single to left field and Taggart pelted a single through the right side of the infield to plate Belvin.
