FRISCO, Texas – A trio of goals and flawless execution of set pieces propelled Texas A&M International University to its first win in its last five matches. Kim Garcia braced the team's first two goals and Karina Garcia distributed a pair of assists as the Dustdevils (2-3-3, 0-0-0 Heartland) dismantled Ouachita Baptist, 3-1, on Sunday in a neutral-site showdown.
"The team understood the urgency of having to score early in this game," TAMIU associate head coach Felipe Arias said. "The goals by (Kim Garcia) and (Paula Arias) were well-timed and well-finished.
"The whole team deserved the result they produced because of their high effort. Now we must move on and begin planning and working on our next match."
The Dustdevils wasted no time in exerting their will on the Tigers as Kim Garcia finished a delivery from Rubi Garza into the back of the net in just the 2nd minute. It took her 37 minutes to notch her second goal of the game – and fifth of the campaign. In the 39th minute, Karina Garcia floated a friendly free kick to Kim Garcia's forehead, which she nodded toward goal and again into the net.
The 2-0 Dustdevils lead didn't dive deep into the second half, as Paula Arias extended it by stabbing in her first goal for TAMIU. Again, Karina Garcia delivered a cross with sniper-specific accuracy – this time from the corner flag. Karina Garcia leads TAMIU with four assists on the season.
The Tigers finally spoiled the Dustdevils' shutout with just eight minutes remaining, but the single goal wasn't enough. TAMIU goalkeeper Chelsea Knaack completed six saves to maintain her 1.53 goals-allowed average through her 765 minutes this season.
The Dustdevils next face a road match at Newman in the Heartland Conference opener on Oct. 4 at 5 p.m. TAMIU returns home on Oct. 11 to host Lubbock Christian. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
