Falcons Beat the Buzzer Over Dustdevils

LAREDO, Texas – The University of Texas – Permian Basin Falcons (11-5, 6-2 Heartland Conference) beat the buzzer to steal a road victory over the Texas A&M International University Dustdevils (8-8, 3-5 Heartland) Saturday afternoon inside the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building.

Senior Patrick Carlson led the Dustdevils with 20 points, two rebounds, one block, and one steal. Carlson went 6-14 (42.9%) from the field, and 5-12 (41.7%) from the 3-point range.

Senior Vadal Faniel was right behind Carlson with 14 points, four rebounds, one assist, and one block. Senior Jamie Farrie and junior Montrice McKnight also put numbers on the scoreboard with nine and eight points, respectively. Farrie also had six rebounds, two blocks, two steals, and one assist. Junior Anthony Alston led the team with eight assists on the afternoon.

In the first half, the Dustdevils took their first lead of the night with 8:25 left on the clock with a 3-pointer by Carlson, assisted by Alston. They took the lead twice more in that half, ending up being down by two at halftime (32-34).

The Dustdevils' shooting percentages were not quite up to the Falcons in the first half, from where they were quite similar in the second half - both teams shooting 40 percent from the field. The Dustdevils saw one lead in the second half with 1:11 left on the clock when Faniel hit a jumper and was assisted by Alston. The score was then tied with 46 seconds left on the clock following a UTPB free throw.

The deciding factor of the game did not come until the last eight seconds of the game where the score was tied at 58, and UTPB had possession of the ball. UTPB's Chris Griffin took a three pointer from the top of the key and missed the shot with four seconds on the clock. The Falcons took another shot, and they missed – though, their player, Codye Hatcher, stuffed the ball back up off of the second missed shot for a miraculous dunk to win the game, just as the time had expired.

Despite the last minute loss, the Dustdevils kept the game in reach by having three lead changes, and the score tied multiple times. The largest lead the Falcons could get on the Dustdevils was 10 in the second half (16:43), which was short-lived.

Next up, TAMIU will face Heartland Conference rival, St. Mary's, on the road Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. in San Antonio.
