St. Mary's Edges TAMIU

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils (8-9, 3-6 Heartland) faced the St. Mary's Rattlers (9-7, 6-3 Heartland) Thursday night at the Bill Greehey Arena, falling 61-73.

Junior Anthony Alson led the Dustdevils with 14 points on the night. Alston shot 71.4 percent (5-7) from the field, 33.3 percent (1-3) from 3-point range, and 100 percent (3-3) from the free throw line. He also led the team in assists with three. Senior Vadel Faniel scored 13 points, had seven rebounds, and two assists on the night. Senior Patrick Carlson and senior Jamie Farrie were right behind him with 10 and nine points, respectively. Farrie also recorded a block for the Dustdevils.

The first 10 minutes of play between the two teams was as intense as expected from the two I-35 rivals. The Dustdevils had their biggest lead of the game at four, in the first half with 16:14 left on the clock from a layup by Farrie. The Rattlers then took the lead shortly after, allowing TAMIU to tie with them once more in the first half. The remainder of the half was close between the two, but the Dustdevils did not regain the lead. Going into the second half, the score was 23-33, Rattlers.

With TAMIU down by 10 at the half, they continued to strive for the comeback and make the Rattlers' lead minimal. TAMIU saw an opening with 13 minutes to go, when Alston made a 3-pointer and a layup back-to-back, making the score 39-44 - trimming the lead to five. Though, the Rattlers came back strong and took away with a greater lead.

In the second half, the Dustdevils recorded a better shooting percentage than the Rattlers - 68.4% from the field, and 50.0% from 3-point range. Though, the Dustdevils got into foul trouble, putting St. Mary's in the double bonus early on in that half. The Rattlers kept an average 10-point edge on the Dustdevils throughout the remainder of the game, ending the game with a final score of 73-61.

Next up, the Dustdevils will face the Dallas Baptist Patriots, Monday night at 5:30 in Laredo.
