LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International University was tested at home by Newman (5-4, 1-2 Heartland Conference) on New Years Day, partly because of a jittery game featuring 59 personal fouls and a combined 73 free throw attempts. After building a 14-point lead with 11 minutes left, TAMIU saw its lead evaporate as the score was tied with five minutes left. TAMIU mounted a 14-5 run with three massive conversions from right under the rim.
Four Dustdevils finished with 10 or more points, led by Anthony Alston (14 points, 4 rebounds) and Vadal Faniel (14 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists). Senior Jamie Farrie finished with 13 points off 3-for-3 shooting from the field in just 15 minutes while grabbing seven rebounds. David Horst buried 10 points with three rebounds and three assists.
The Dustdevils shot 54 percent (23-43) from the field while struggling at the free throw line (20-35). The officials' whistles dominated on both ends of the floor, as Newman finished 28-38 from the free throw line – including six of their first 10 points.
The Dustdevils (7-4, 2-1 Heartland) host Oklahoma Christian on Saturday at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building at 3 p.m.
