LAREDO, Texas – After trailing by nine points before scoring its first points of the game, Texas A&M International University rebounded to outmuscle Oklahoma Christian, 63-57, in overtime on Saturday at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building. Senior big men Jamie Farrie and Vadal Faniel scored 17 and 16 points, respectively, in the Dustdevils' (8-4, 3-1 Heartland Conference) third consecutive conference victory.
TAMIU led by 10 points with 12:30 left, but six straight converted free throws led the Eagles' resurgence, eventually seeing them force overtime with a 52-all knot.
The overtime period was just as claustrophobic, seeing TAMIU finally separate itself after OC was forced to foul with less than 30 seconds left. Conversions by Montrice McKnight and Anthony Alston iced the victory for the home team.
Farrie was a monster in the post, scoring the Dustdevils' first eight points of the game, to finish with 17 points, six rebounds and two assists off the bench.
Faniel played 31 minutes and was a rebound away from a 16-point, nine rebound double-double. Faniel was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
Alston shot an unblemished 10-for-10 from the free throw line as he finished with 12 points and five rebounds. McKnight also shot a steady 4-for-4 from the line, finishing with 12 points and six boards.
The Dustdevils visit Rogers State on Jan. 8 before returning home on Jan. 15 to host St. Edward's.
