TAMIU Downs Dallas Baptist, 74-56

LAREDO, Texas – The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils (9-9, 4-6 Heartland) downed the Dallas Baptist Patriots (10-8, 4-6 Heartland) Monday night at the TAMIU KCB, 74-56.

Senior Vadal Faniel led the team with 25 points. Faniel went 9-17 from the field, and went 7-11 at the free throw line. He also had eight rebounds (3 offensive, 5 defensive), one block, and two steals on the night.

Junior Anthony Alston was the second highest scorer for the Dustdevils, with 16 points. Most of Alston's points came from free throws, going 12-13 from the line (92.3%). Alston recorded five defensive rebounds, five assists, and four steals for TAMIU.

Junior Terrell Funches, senior Jamie Farrie, and senior Patrick Carlson each scored eight points. Farrie matched Faniel for the game-high of eight rebounds. Funches added in two assists and three steals for the team. Junior Montrice McKnight gave the Dustdevils one assist and three steals.

The Dustdevils outscored the Patriots early on in the first half, shooting 34.6 percent from the field, while the Patriots only shot 27.3 percent. The closest the Patriots could get to the Dustdevils was when they trailed by one point early on in the first. Shortly after, the Patriots were answered with jumpers from Faniel and junior David Horst. With 10 minutes to go in the first half, TAMIU had set a strict margin of 10 points on the Patriots.

TAMIU's shooting percentages only got better in the second half as they increased to 44.4 percent from the field, and 37.5 percent from 3-point range. The Dustdevils also increased their lead to an average of 18 points throughout the second half. TAMIU had their largest lead (24) of the night in the second half with 4:12 left on the clock.

TAMIU's defense stunned the Patriots and forced many turnovers, turning into extra digits for the Dustdevils. The Dustdevils scored 24 points off of the Patriots turnovers, and scored seven second-chance points.

"I was proud of our guys effort tonight. I thought our focus and will to win was greater than I had seen in a long time. We have to take this same focus and bring it on this tough road trip this week," said head coach Bryan Weakley.

Next up, the Dustdevils will face Newman on the road Thursday night. Newman and TAMIU will battle, as they both have a 4-6 Heartland Conference record.
