Dustdevils Defeated by Rattlers in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils were defeated by the St. Mary's Rattlers, 42-68 Thursday night at the Bill Greehey Arena, dropping to 8-9, (4-5 Heartland Conference), while the Rattlers now sit at 12-5, (6-3 Heartland) on the season.

Junior Jessica Prieto led the Dustdevils with 22 points, shooting 9-19 (47.4%) from the field, and 4-10 (40%) from three-point range. Prieto also gave the Dustdevils three rebounds, three assists, two steals, and one block on the night.

Behind Prieto, senior Mason Hawk scored seven points on the night, adding two rebounds, two assists, and a steal for the Dustdevils. Leading TAMIU on the boards were junior Keiona Mathews and senior Samone Davis with six each. Mathews also led the team in steals with three. Senior Jessica Woo and senior Alexis Thomas also added five and four points to the scoreboard, respectively.

The Rattlers dominated play from the beginning of the game, never allowing TAMIU to take the lead. TAMIU didn't get their chance to score until four minutes into the game when Thomas made a 3-pointer, making the score 3-8. With 10:28 left in the first half, Prieto made a jumper, giving the Dustdevils one of their smallest margins (7) with the Rattlers in the first half. The Rattlers kept moving as the Dustdevils went into the half trailing 16-30.

TAMIU's shooting percentages increased in the second half from 20.8 percent to 25.7 percent from the field, and from 14.3 percent to 26.3 percent from 3-point range. Although, that wasn't enough to take the lead from the Rattlers and their U.S. Basketball Writers Association Division II Women's National Player, Morgan Pullins, who was one of two Rattlers to record double-double figures on the night.

The Dustdevils will return in action next Thursday night at 5:30 p.m. as they take on Newman in Wichita, Kansas. This will be TAMIU and Newman's second matchup of the season, as the Dustdevils previously beat the Jets on New Years Day 70-52.
