TAMIU Splits With SEOS on Home Opener

LAREDO, Texas - Texas A&M International and Southeastern Oklahoma State split a season-opening doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Laredo's Uni-Trade Stadium.  SEOSU took the opener 4-2 before TAMIU bounced back with a 1-0 win in game two.

Southeastern Oklahoma's Dylan Linke was throwing a two-hit shutout in the opener until Savage Storm first baseman Chance Burcham dropped an easy throw to first with two outs in the sixth inning, opening the gates for two unearned Dustdevil runs.  Jake Cardoza scored from third on the drop of a Reynaldo Adames grounder and two batters later, Adames tied the score 2-2 on a RBI single by Daniel Cruz.

Neither team scored in the seventh inning of the game scheduled to go seven innings before Southeastern Oklahoma took a two-run lead in the top of the eighth on a couple of RBI singles.  Adames and Cruz reached base in the bottom of the eighth but the game ended when Nathan Halas grounded into a fielder's choice out with runners on first and third base.

Cruz and Andrew Arteaga each contributed a team-high two hits with Arteaga contributing TAMIU's only extra base hit, a line shot triple to the center field fence in the bottom of the first inning.  The Dustdevils finished with six hits as a team.

Jared Curnel pitched decently in a no decision outing for the Dustdevils.  He allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits with three walks and three strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work.  Dino Cristiani (0-1) took the loss after allowing two runs on four hits in 2.0 innings of relief work.

Game two turned out to be a pitching duel between TAMIU's Jeremy Gonzalez and SEOSU's Nick Johnson.   Dustdevil second baseman Cody Perez provided all the offense Gonzalez would need with a sharp grounder to third base in the bottom of the fifth inning that was too hot for Savage Storm third baseman Logan Terwilliger to handle, allowing Nathan Halas to score from third base to push the Dustdevils to a 1-0 lead.

Gonzalez (1-0) retired six SEOSU batters in order after being provided the lead to close-out the win with a 92 pitch, four-hit shutout.  He struck out four batters and allowed three walks and only one extra base hit, a second inning double.

TAMIU and SEOSU will close-out the series with a single game at Uni-Trade Stadium.  First pitch is scheduled for noon.
