TAMIU Tops SEOS in Series Opener

LAREDO, Texas – The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils (2-1) went solid with the bats against the Southeastern Oklahoma State University Savage Storm (1-2) Saturday afternoon at Uni-Trade Stadium, taking the series 2-1.

The Dustdevils took the lead early in the first inning as junior Jeff Morgan scored on an RBI by senior Andrew Arteaga. The Savage Storm answered with some hits in the top of the second to make the score 3-1 SEOS. The Savage Storm got their bats moving and upped their runs to five, leading the Dustdevils by three in the top of the 4th.

Senior Jake Cardoza changed the pace of the game in the bottom of the 4th inning, with an out-of-the-park home run over the left-center wall to score three runs (Cardoza, senior Eric Moritz, and junior Nathan Halas). Banking off the momentum, junior Reynaldo Adames doubled to left field, scoring Morgan and Perez, making the score 5-7 Dustdevils.

TAMIU dominated the sixth inning, adding in three more runs from Adames, Arteaga, and then Cruz on a double from Halas. TAMIU's pitching and defense kept the lead at 5, eventually winning the game 10-5.

TAMIU's Sammy Alvarado (1-0) recorded the win for the Dustdevils. Alvarado pitched 3.1 innings, and faced 14 batters. He had three strikeouts and allowed no walks on the afternoon.

Cardoza went 2-3 on the afternoon with one homerun and three RBI. Arteaga also was one of the Dustdevils' impact players, as he went 3-5 on the afternoon with one run, two RBI, and two doubles. Morgan went 2-4 and batted .500 on the day.

The Dustdevils baseball team will be back in action on Friday, February 6. They will face Angelo State University on the road for a 3-game series.
