Box Score AUSTIN, Texas (October 29, 2015) -- The TAMIU Women's Soccer team defeated the #22 St. Edward's Hilltoppers for the first time in program history with a 2-1 victory on Thursday afternoon. With the defeat of the #22 Hilltoppers, TAMIU has moved their record to 2-13-1 overall, and have captured their first conference win (1-5-1 HC).
The Dustdevils capitalized on their offensives opportunities to generate the victory. TAMIU drew first blood in the 30th minute, when Senior Kim Garcia was awarded a penalty kick after a St. Edward's foul in the box. Garcia faked out the #22 Hilltoppers keeper, putting the Dustdevils up 1-0.
TAMIU would continue this momentum through the half time intermission. Strong midfield work would move the ball up to Junior Daisy Perez, who placed a pass through to Senior Kim Garcia. Garcia banked her shot off of the crossbar to beat the #22 Hilltoppers keeper again in the 51st minute. The 2-0 lead included Garcia's 6th and 7th goals of the 2015 campaign.Â
The 2-0 Dustdevils score was cut in half by the Hilltoppers in the 72nd minute. The 2-1 score would hold through the final buzzer, resulting in the TAMIU win.
Defensively, the Dustdevils held strong against 16 shots from the #22 Hilltoppers, as well as 12 corner kick opportunities. Senior Goalkeeper Chelsea Knaack made 7 saves in total.
