BELTON, Texas (December 5, 2015) -- TAMIU's
Keiona Mathews led the Dustdevils to victory with a 23-point performance against Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday night. The 60-52 win allowed for the Dustdevils second victory of the 2015-16 season, pushing their record to 2-5 overall.Â
The Dustdevils trailed UMHB by three as the first half concluded, which required a strong push in the second half to secure their win. TAMIU would trade leads with the Crusaders until the final three minutes of the fourth quarter. As time diminished, a 3-pointer by
Keiona Mathews sparked the Dustdevils to net 8-straight points, which put them on top as the final buzzer sounded.
Seniors
Keiona Mathews and
Jessica Prieto lead their team by securing points from the line for TAMIU, both going 100% in free throw attempts. Junior newcomer
Hannah Beede contributed 15 points in the win.
"Of course it's nice to get the win." said Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "It wasn't a pretty win but we finished strong and had some big plays down the stretch."
With the win, TAMIU will look to focus on their final non-conference match up against Texas A&M - Kingsville on Saturday, December 12th. Previously, the Javelinas have claimed narrow victories (57-60, 66-67) in each of the previous two times the teams have met this season. The action will begin in Kingsville at 7pm.
"I'm looking forward to having a full week of practice. There are many areas that we need to continue to work on." said Bento-Jackson.
