Dustdevils Drop Heartbreaker to UTPB

ODESSA, Texas – The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils (10-13, 5-10 Heartland) dropped a heartbreaker to the University of Texas-Permian Basin Falcons (15-8, 10-5), as the Falcons outscored the Dustdevils 5-0 in the last 25 seconds of the game.
 
TAMIU and UTPB rallied in the first half as there were eight lead changes throughout the half. TAMIU and UTPB both shot around 40 percent from the field, and 35 percent from 3-point range in the half. At halftime, the Dustdevils led the Falcons by 3.
 
TAMIU had its largest lead of eight in the second half, with 7:27 left on the clock. TAMIU's shooting percentages in the second half were outstanding as they went 64.3 percent from the floor, and 70 percent from 3-point range. The Dustdevils led the majority of the second half, with an exception of one minute between 10:54 and 9:50, and then again with 0:12 remaining on the clock, where the Falcons stole the win from the Dustdevils.
 
Junior Terrell Funches had a career-high 23 points. He shot 9-13 (69.2) from the field, 4-6 (66.7%) from 3-point range, and 1-1 (100%) from the free throw line. Funches added in three rebounds, one assist, and a game-high four steals.
 
Senior William Wise also scored his career-high 17 points against the Falcons. Wise went 6-11 (54.5%) from the field, 2-3 (66.7%) from the 3-point range, and 3-6 (50%) from the free throw line. Wise also recorded three rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
 
Also scoring for the Dustdevils were junior Montrice McKnight (9), junior Anthony Alston (8), junior David Horst (7), senior Vadal Faniel (6), senior Curtis Trotter (4), and sophomore Marcus Hall (2). Alston had a game-high seven assists, and Horst recorded three steals on the night.
 
Next up, the Dustdevils will face St. Edward's University (17-6, 9-6 Heartland) Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. in Austin, Texas.
