St. Edward’s University Outlasts TAMIU, 73-59

AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's University Hilltoppers (18-6, 10-6 Heartland) outlast the Texas A&M International Dustdevils (10-14, 5-11 Heartland) Saturday afternoon.

St. Edward's took the lead from the start, off of a layup from Ramir Burton. TAMIU would then come close to stealing the lead a few times in the first half, but not having the chance to overstep that boundary. With 18:16 left in the first half, TAMIU trailed by one from a 3-pointer by junior Montrice McKnight. The Dustdevils once again came within one point with 2:39 left on the clock in the first half, when another 3-pointer was good from senior Patrick Carlson. TAMIU went into the half trailing the Hilltoppers 27-34.

TAMIU entered the second half behind seven points, hoping to catch up and take the lead. TAMIU got within four points with free throw shots from juniorTerrell Funches at the 16:51 minute mark in the second half. St. Edward's would once again go with the shots, and greaten the lead on the Dustdevils to end the game with a score of 73-59.

McKnight and Funches were the leading scorers for TAMIU, putting 18 and 17 points up on the scoreboard, respectively. McKnight not only led the team in total points, but he also led the team with four steals. Funches came one rebound short of a double-double, recording nine rebounds on the night (2 offensively, 7 defensively). Senior Vadal Faniel was right behind Funches with eight boards against the Hilltoppers.

The Dustdevils will see four more games on the season, against Heartland Conference opponents St. Mary's, Dallas Baptist, Oklahoma Panhandle State, and Lubbock Christian. Next up is St. Mary's at the TAMIU Kinesiology Convocation Building, Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.
