TAMIU Closes Out OLLU Series With Two Wins on Saturday

LAREDO, Texas – The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils (5-5) completed their series against the Our Lady of the Lake Saints Saturday afternoon at Jorge Haynes Field with two wins, 4-2 and 8-3.

 
GAME ONE – Connor Belvin's home run lifted TAMIU over the OLLU Saints Saturday afternoon, winning the ballgame 4-2.
 
The TAMIU Dustdevils and the OLLU Saints went scoreless in the first three innings of play.
 
In the top of the 4th inning, the Saints scored two runs on four hits, and had three runners left on base to close the inning out.
 
TAMIU answered in the bottom of the 4th with three runs, taking their first lead of the game. Sophomore Daniel Cruz doubled to right center, as he was TAMIU's first runner on base this inning. Next up, senior Jake Cardoza singled to second base, advancing Cruz to third. Belvin was next up as the plate, and put some power in his swing, slamming the ball over the left field wall for his first home run of the season. Belvin recorded all three RBI that inning.
 
The Dustdevils added one more run to their lead in the bottom of the 6th as senior Eric Moritz hit a sacrifice fly out to right field for an RBI.
 
Catcher Jake Cardoza went 1.000 in game one, going 2-2 at the plate. Cruz went .500 in this game, going 1-2, and scoring two runs. Junior Michael Colorado also went 1-2 at the plate.
 
TAMIU's seniors worked the pitching mound, as Armando Manrrique recorded the win (2-1), and Dino Cristiani recorded his first save of the season.
 
 
 
GAME TWO – The Dustdevils went 2-0 on the day against the OLLU Saints, winning the second game of the afternoon, 8-3.
 
The Saints put the Dustdevils to a test in the 1st inning, scoring one run to gain the lead.
 
Though, there was no chance for the Saints, as TAMIU scored five runs in the 2nd inning, and two runs in the 3rd inning, making the score 7-1 Dustdevils.
 
In the 2nd inning, senior Jake Cardoza started the Dustdevils off with a single to left field. Following Cardoza, sophomore Connor Belvin hit another single to left field, moving Cardoza to third. Senior Eric Moritz followed, with an RBI and sacrifice fly to left field. Sophomore Alexander Cabezas then came to bat, as he recorded an RBI single. With two runners on base, junior Jeffrey Morgan homered to right center, and recorded three RBI.
 
In the 3rd inning, a couple of TAMIU batters got on base, as the OLLU pitcher walked a trio of Dustdevils, and OLLU's first baseman had a blooper, which assisted in TAMIU's two runs this inning.
 
OLLU would spend the rest of the game trying to catch up with the Dustdevils, but failed to do so as they were only able to score two more runs in the 4th inning.
 
The Dustdevils increased their lead by one in the bottom of the 6th, as they scored on a wild pitch and ended the game with a final score of 8-3.
 
Morgan went 1-3 in game two, recording his first homerun of the season. Morgan also recorded two runs, and 3 RBI.
 
Cardoza went 1-1 at the plate, scoring two Dustdevil runs against the Saints. Belvin and Eric Moritz both went .500 on the afternoon.
 
TAMIU's Sammy Alvarado(2-0) recorded the win for the Dustdevils, as he pitched 5.2 innings, and only allowed six hits and three runs. Alvarado had a stunning seven strikeouts on the afternoon. Junior Daniel Edmondo closed the game out for the Dustdevils, as he pitched 1.1 innings, and only allowed one hit, and struck out two.
 
Next up, the Dustdevils will face Tarleton State on the road for a series that will begin on February 20.
