Tight Finish Determines TAMIU’s Loss Over St. Mary’s

LAREDO, Texas – The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils came up short, as the St. Mary's Rattlers outscored the Dustdevils by nine points in the second half, leading to a 61-57 victory over the Dustdevils Thursday night at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building.
 
The Dustdevils and Rattlers fought hard with each other in the first half, until TAMIU took a significant lead with one minute left in the half, after being tied with the Rattlers numerous times. TAMIU's senior Curtis Trotter, junior David Horst, junior Montrice McKnight, junior Anthony Alston consecutively scored baskets, greatening TAMIU's lead by 10. The Dustdevils went into the half leading the Rattlers by five points.
 
The second half was more of a struggle, as the margins closed, and St. Mary's shortly took the majority lead, with their largest lead of nine. In the second half, the Dustdevils' shooting percentages dropped from 45 percent from the field, to 33.3 percent from the field. At three point range, the Dustdevils dropped from 37.5 percent to 16.7 percent.
 
The end was a tight finish as the Dustdevils closed the lead to one, twice. With 27 seconds to go, Alston made a 3-point shot, hyping up the team to come back from their shortfall. TAMIU had no choice but to foul with such little time on the clock. St. Mary's Marvin Binney made two free throws, putting the Dustdevils down by three with 22 seconds on the clock. TAMIU played the clock, and Alston was able to get one more layup in, as the Rattlers were acing their free throws. TAMIU ended up falling short, by three points to end the game.
 
Alston had the game-high 24 points, shooting 50 percent from the field. Alston also added in five rebounds, two assists, one block, and a game-high four steals.
 
McKnight was TAMIU's other force player, scoring 13 points, adding in four rebounds, and one steal.
 
Next up, the Dustdevils will face Dallas Baptist on the road Saturday afternoon, and then be back in action at home next Thursday and Saturday for their final two games of the season.
