Dustdevils Drop Doubleheader Against A&M-Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils (7-11) drop a pair to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders (4-12-1) in a Wednesday afternoon doubleheader at Chapman Field.

GAME ONE: Texas A&M International 1, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 5
While both the Dustdevils and Islanders each had six hits in game one, TAMIU was not able to pull through when needed, as they only scored one run in the 6th inning, leaving a total of eight players on base throughout the game. In contrast, TAMUCC worked on scoring runs and only left two players on base throughout the game.

Senior Sarah Johnson led the Dustdevils at the plate, going 2-3 in game one against the Islanders. Senior Mariena Gallardo (1-2) and sophomore Brenda Parnin (1-4) each hit one double on the afternoon. Gallardo recorded TAMIU's only RBI.

TAMIU's freshman Delainy Thompson suffered the loss for the Dustdevils, pitching six innings, allowing only six hits and five runs. Thompson struck out five Islanders on the afternoon.

GAME TWO: Texas A&M International 0, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 2
TAMUCC shutout the Dustdevils in game two of the afternoon, as the Islanders only allowed no runs on two TAMIU hits.

TAMUCC scored one run in the 1st, and one run in the 5th, leading the Dustdevils by two, eventually taking the 2-0 win.

TAMIU had a chance to score in the top of the 5th on a pair of walks and a fielding error, but had trouble seeking an RBI hit to score a Dustdevil run.

TAMIU's two hits came later in the game, as they were fighting to take the lead. In the top of the 6th, senior Mariena Gallardo got on base on balls, and freshman Brandi Giles singled to left field. Though, strikeouts came in the way of scoring to two on base.

The Dustdevils didn't give up quite yet, as they were determined to have a strong 7th inning. Though, only two players could get on base (freshman Alyssa Acuna from a walk, and sophomore Brenda Parnin with a single through the right side).

The Islanders pitcher, S. Flores, finished up the game with seven Dustdevil strikeouts, while walking six.

TAMIU's Giles recorded her first loss on the season. Giles pitched all six innings, and only allowed five hits and two runs (only one of them earned) striking out four.

Next up the Dustdevils will start Heartland Conference play in their home opener against Newman University Friday afternoon at 12 p.m. for a doubleheader.
