Dustdevils Start Conference Play with Two Wins Over Newman

LAREDO, Texas – The Texas A&M International Dustdevils (9-11) started conference play with two wins against the Newman University Jets (2-11) Friday afternoon at Dustdevil Field under rough weather conditions.
 
 
GAME ONE: Texas A&M International 5, Newman University 4
 
Despite a bumpy first inning, the Dustdevils turned around throughout the remainder of the game to pull through with a 5-4 win over the Jets.
 
In the 1st inning, TAMIU had trouble adjusting to the rainy and cold atmosphere, as they gave up four runs on only one Newman hit, and the Dustdevils had four errors in the infield.
 
Down four runs, the Dustdevils came back with one run in the second, as senior
Sarah Johnson singled to center field, and advanced second on a wild pitch. Shortly after, freshman Alyssa Soneff singled to the Jet shortstop, as the shortstop recorded an error to round off Johnson to home plate for the Dustdevils' first run of the afternoon.
 
TAMIU's prime inning came along in the 3rd, as junior
Chelsea Capello started out the inning with a double to left field. Capello advanced to third on a ground out, and then scored on a single by sophomore Brittany Mussett. Senior Mariena Gallardo would soon follow with a double to left center, advancing Mussett to third. Mussett scored and Gallardo moved over to third on a Jet wild pitch. TAMIU would add one more run to the board as Soneff singled down the left field line, scoring Gallardo to make the score tied at four.
 
Leave it up to Mussett in the 6th inning to pull through and score sohomore
Brenda Parnin on a double down the left field line to take the win for the Dustdevils, as they closed out the 7th inning with no problem.
 
Johnson and Soneff both went 2-3 in game one, as Mussett and Capello went 2-4 at the plate. Mussett and Soneff had two and one RBI, respectively.
 
Gallardo (3-4) snatched the win for the Dustdevils, pitching a complete game and struck out two on the afternoon.
 
 
GAME TWO: Texas A&M International 8, Newman University 2
 
After tying the game at one in the 1st inning, the Dustdevils dominated the 2nd inning with seven runs on back-to-back hits, and didn't allow Newman to come close to their six point lead throughout the remainder of the game.
 
In the 2nd inning, TAMIU had seven runs and five hits, with three Newman errors. Freshman
Brandi Giles started the inning out with a hit to third base, from where the Jets third baseman encountered an error. Giles quickly after advanced to second on a wild pitch. Freshman Alyssa Acuna came up to the plate next, hitting an RBI double to left center to take the lead at 2-1.
 
Next up was sophomore
Krissy Sardelich who had an RBI single to left field. Junior Chelsea Capello soon reached on a walk by the Jets pitcher, and then sophomore Brenda Parnin came up to the plate and boomed a homer out to right field, scoring three Dustdevil runs.
 
With no outs in the 3rd, hits by sophomore
Brittany Mussett and freshman Alyssa Soneff, along with two more Jet errors, scored two more TAMIU runs to make the score 7-1 Dusdevils.
 
The remainder of the game was pretty quick, as no runs were scored until the top of the 7th, where the Jets scored one run, making the final score 8-2 TAMIU.
 
Pinch hitter, junior
Jessica Rivera, went 1-1 against the Jets. Capello went 1-2 in game two of the afternoon.
 
Sarah Johnson (4-1) recorded the win for the Dustdevils, allowing eight hits in all seven innings.
 
Tomorrow the Dustdevils will close up their first Heartland Conference series against Newman back at Dustdevil Field with a single game starting at 12:00 p.m.
