Dustdevils Drive 20-Point Win Over OPSU, 75-55

LAREDO, Texas – The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils (12-15, 7-12 Heartland) drove a 20-point win over the Oklahoma Panhandle State University Aggies (3-24, 1-18 Heartland) Thursday night at the Kinesiology & Convocation Building.

TAMIU shot an overall 52.6 percent from the field, and 39.1 percent from the 3-point range, outnumbering the Aggies by a good 25 percent from the field. TAMIU also out-rebounded the Aggies 41-22 on the night. The Dustdevils scored 13 points off of Aggie turnovers, and had 20 second-chance points.

The Dustdevils never allowed the Aggies to take the lead, as they took it early on in the game, and kept adding to their lead throughout the game. OPSU got within three points a couple times early on in the first, although trailed by six at halftime.

In the second half, the Dustdevils allowed the Aggies to get within two points just a few minutes in, although TAMIU went away with the lead at 15:49 with a 3-pointer by senior Montrice McKnight. Jumpers by senior Vadal Faniel helped increase the lead even more.

TAMIU led by an average 10 points for the remainder of the second half, although the Dustdevils increased that lead to 18 with 1:46 on the clock, when junior Terrell Funches was on a roll with 3-pointers. TAMIU would then increase the lead by buckets from senior Curtis Trotter, taking the 75-55 win over OPSU.

Funches led the Dustdevils with 20 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Funches went 7-11 (63.6%) from the field, and 6-10 (6-%) from 3-point range.

McKnight was one rebound short of tackling a double-double, scoring 16 points on the night. He also added in four assists and one steal.

Also hitting double digits on the scoreboard were seniors Faniel and Trotter, each scoring 10 points apiece. On the defensive end, junior David Horst totaled 10 rebounds for the Dustdevils.

Junior Anthony Alston recorded a game-high seven assists on the night, while adding in five points for the Dustdevils.

"I thought our guys played hard tonight. Our defense spurred our offense in many possessions. I especially thought Marcus Hall gave us a huge boost off the bench," said head coach, Bryan Weakley. Junior Marcus Hall added in eight points for TAMIU.

On Saturday, the men's basketball team will take on their last game of the season against Lubbock Christian (12-7, 15-11 Heartland) at 3:00 p.m. in the TAMIU KCB, where they will also honor their five seniors on Senior Day.
