LAREDO, Texas - Texas A&M International completed a three-game sweep of Newman with a 12-4 win over the Jets on Saturday afternoon at Dustdevil Field. The game ended after Newman batted in the fifth inning due to the Heartland Conference's 8-run rule after five innings of play.
Brenda Parnin pushed TAMIU (10-11, 3-0 Heartland) to a two run lead with a two run homer to dead center in the bottom of the first inning. Three Newman errors allowed the Dustdevils to add six runs in the bottom of the second inning to build an 8-0 lead. The big blows in that frame were back-to-back RBI doubles by Parnin and Brittany Mussett.
Newman (2-12, 0-3) cut TAMIU's lead to 8-3 on a three run homer by Breanna Pingry in the top of the third inning but the Dustdevils answered with two runs in the bottom of the third to retake control of the game. The two runs were scored on a RBI double by Alyssa Soneff and a RBI single by Alyssa Acuna.
The Dustdevils and Jets finished dead even with eight hits apiece but five Newman errors led to eight unearned TAMIU runs.
Delainy Thompson (3-5) earned the win in a complete game effort for the Dustdevils. She allowed fours runs (three earned) on eight hits in 5.0 innings of work. Thompson allowed two walks with six strikeouts.
Next up, the Dustdevils will face the Universtity of Texas-Permian Basin Falcons in Odessa on Mar. 6 and 7 for a three-game series.
