Dustdevils Power Through Permian Basin in Friday Afternoon’s Doubleheader

ODESSA, Texas – The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils (12-11, 5-0 Heartland) powered through the University of Texas Permian Basin Falcons (4-17, 0-4 Heartland) Friday afternoon in the first two games of the three-game series.

GAME ONE: Texas A&M International 6, UT-Permian Basin 2

The game remained scoreless until the Dustdevils had a remarkable 3rd inning where they score five runs, on five hits, including two back-to-back home runs from sophomore
Brittany Mussett and senior Mariena Gallardo. Also swinging the bats this inning were freshman Alyssa Soneff (2B), and freshman Brandi Giles and sophomore Krissy Sardelich (1B).

The Falcons answered with one run in the bottom of the 3rd and another in the bottom of the 4th.

TAMIU would once score again in the top of the 5th on a Falcon error, making the score 6-2 Dustdevils. The TAMIU defense closed out the Falcons in the remaining innings, taking the win on game one of the afternoon.

TAMIU and UTPB had seven and six runs, respectively, in game one. Though, UTPB's error and inability to follow through with hits (6 LOB), helped them award the win to the Dustdevils.

Senior pitcher, Gallardo (4-4), clutched the win for the Dustdevils. Gallardo pitched all seven innings, and allowed six hits and one walk. Gallardo struck out six Falcons at the plate on the afternoon.

GAME TWO: Texas A&M International 10, UT-Permian Basin 1

In game two of the afternoon, TAMIU scored a whopping 10 runs in the 3rd and 4th innings, sealing the deal in the 5th, to mercy the Falcons 10-1.

The Falcons were able to score one run to start the game off in the 2nd inning as UTPB's JJ Von Oesen doubled to centerfield, and scored on a single and fielder's choice.

In the top of the 3rd inning, TAMIU's sophomore
Krissy Sardelich started the inning with a double to left field. A few batters down, sophomore Brittany Mussett came up to the plate and homered to left field (her second on the day, fourth this season) to make the score 2-1 Dustdevils.

The 4th inning was a mix of seven hits and five Falcon errors that allowed the Dustdevils to score eight runs. Senior
Mariena Gallardo homered to left field for her second of the day (fifth on the season). Freshman Alyssa Soneff and Mussett both doubled in the 4th, while junior Jessica Rivera , Sardelich, and freshman Alyssa Acuna had singles to contribute to the eight runs scored.

TAMIU closed the game out with the mercy rule, not allowing any more runs in the bottom of the 4th and 5th innings. Senior
Sarah Johnson recorded the win for the Dustdevils, as she only allowed three Falcon hits, one run, and struck out three on the afternoon.
