TAMIU Faces TAMUK on Opening Day

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils faced the Texas A&M University-Kingsville Javelinas Wednesday afternoon at Hubert Field, only to fall 0-2 on their opening day doubleheader.

GAME 1 – The Dustdevils lost their first game of the season 2-4 against the Javelinas. TAMIU scored two runs, on six hits and three TAMUK errors.

The TAMUK Javelinas started off the game with a boom in the 2nd inning. The Javelina's Karri Smith singled up the middle, scoring one run. Shortly after, Smith created a pickle situation between first and second, resulting in another Javelina player crossing the plate - making the score 2-0 Javelinas.

It wasn't until the 5th inning that TAMIU's
freshman Alyssa Soneff scored the Dustdevils' first run off of a passed ball. TAMUK would soon return with two runs in the 5th, increasing their lead to three.

The Dustdevils looked to get a couple more runs on the Javelinas, but were only able to gain one more run in the 6th inning off of a single by senior Mariena Gallardo. Gallardo went 1-3 offensively, recording the only RBI for the Dustdevils.

Freshman pitch hitter Brani Giles started out the season with a 1.000 batting percentage, hitting a single up the middle in the 5th inning. Soneff starts off the season with a .333 batting average, recording TAMIU's only double of the game.

Gallardo opened up the season for the Dustdevils as pitcher. Gallardo pitched a total of five innings, allowing seven hits and four runs. Unfortunately, Gallardo recorded her first loss of the season as TAMUK's pitcher, Smith, recorded the win for the Javelinas.

GAME 2 – Game two was a thriller as the score stayed tied 0-0 until the bottom of the 7th inning.

TAMUK's pitcher, Carlie Clark, had a no-hitter until the top of the 6th inning, when TAMIU's sophomore Krissy Sardelich made it to first base on a bunt. Sardelich eventually advanced to second base from a single by junior Chelsea Capello - only to be left on base that inning.

In the top of the
7th inning, sophomore Brittany Mussett started the inning out with a double to right field. Keeping in mind that the Dustdevils needed to score Mussett, they were not able to use that momentum as the Javelina's pitcher struck out two, and one Dustdevil lined out to second base to end the top of that innning.

TAMUK's sole run didn't come until the bottom of the 7th inning where two Javelinas got on second and third base off of a single, followed by a double. In order for TAMIU to make the force play at home, the Dustdevils had to intentionally walk TAMUK's batter, making the bases loaded. Unluckily, TAMUK did not get a chance to hit the ball to force the play, as the freshman TAMIU pitcher, Delainy Thompson (0-1) walked the batter, scoring the Javelina's game-winning run at the plate.

Next up the Dustdevils will face St. Edward's, Angelo State, and Colorado School of Mines at the ASU George McCorkle Classic in San Angelo, Texas from Feb. 6 – Feb. 8.
