Dustdevils Drop Spirit Week Game Against UAFS

LAREDO, Texas – The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils (10-11, 5-8 Heartland) fell to the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith Lions (13-8, 9-4 Heartland) 62-66 after a long-fought battle at TAMIU's Spirit week game Thursday night.
 
The Dustdevils came out strong, taking the lead to start the game off of a 3-pointer by junior Anthony Alston. TAMIU took away with the hoops and had their largest lead of six in the first half with 17:42 left on the clock from a layup by junior Montrice McKnight. The Lions soon took up the lead with 15:00 left in the first half, and remained ahead of the Dustdevils for the remainder of the first.  In the first half, the Lions outscored the Dustdevils by six points, going into the half with a score of 26-32.
 
In the second half, the Dustdevils improved their shooting percentages from 38.4 percent (field) and 33.3 percent (3-point range) to 50 percent and 37.5 percent, respectively.  UAFS remained ahead for the majority of the half, until TAMIU's senior Jamie Farrie made a jumper with 5:58 shown on the clock.
 
TAMIU felt the energy from the spectators at the spirit night, and quickly gained a six point lead on the Lions off of a 3-pointer from senior Patrick Carlson, and a steal and fast break layup by Alston. TAMIU remained in control until UAFS took the lead again with 1:50 on the clock. The Lions increased their lead to four, and ended up defeating the Dustdevils 62-66.
 
Alston had a game-high 17 points, going 5-8 from the field, and shooting 50 and 75 percent from the 3-point range and free throw line, respectively. Alston also recorded a game-high three steals, and three assists on the night.
 
Senior Vadal Faniel came one rebound short of a double-double. Faniel scored 11 points and had the team's game-high nine rebounds for TAMIU. Faniel also added two assists to the totals for the Dustdevils.
 
McKnight scored 12 points for the Dustdevils, adding in two assists and two rebounds for the team. Carlson and Farrie each had nine points apiece. Junior David Horst had a game-high of four assists.
 
This Saturday, the Dustdevils will take on Rogers State University (14-7, 8-5 Heartland) at 3:00 p.m. in the TAMIU KCB. TAMIU faced Rogers State earlier in the season, and lost 71-78.
