Dustdevils Close Out ASU George McCorkle Classic With Two W’s

SAN ANGELO, Texas – On Sunday afternoon, the Texas A&M International University Dustdevils closed out the Angelo State University George McCorkle Classic with two wins against Colorado School of Mines Orediggers and Southwestern Oklahoma State Rangers, 4-0 and 9-5.
 
 
TAMIU vs. CSM – The Dustdevils took the field at 12:20 p.m. Sunday afternoon for a rematch against the Colorado School of Mines, whom TAMIU had beaten the previous day, 6-3.

The Dustdevils ended up taking the lead in the 1st inning, and adding to the total in the 5th inning, for the win against the Orediggers with a score of 4-0.
 
Freshman Delainy Thompson recorded her first win of the season, pitching a fantastic game, allowing no runs and only five hits in all seven innings pitched. She overpowered the CSM pitcher whom allowed 12 hits, four runs, and had four errors.
 
TAMIU's junior Chelsea Capello went 3-3 against the Orediggers, increasing her batting average to .409 on the season. Sophomore Brittany Mussett went 2-3 and added in two RBI for the Dustdevils, while senior Mariena Gallardo added the other two RBI to the books. Sophomore Krissy Sardelich went swinging this afternoon, recording a .500 batting average against the Orediggers and scoring one out of the four Dustdevil runs.

Also batting .500 this game was sophomore Anna Parnin.  Sophomore Ariana Reyes came in to pinch hit in the 6th inning and went 1-1 (1.000) on her first appearance this season for the Dustdevils.

 
TAMIU vs. SWOS – The Dustdevils were ready to roll for their last game of the ASU George McCorkle Challenge, as they faced the Southwestern Oklahoma State Rangers, increasing their winning streak to three, as they beat the Rangers 9-5.
 
The Dustdevils took the lead in the 1st inning, as Mussett had an RBI single, scoring Sardelich to make the score 1-0 TAMIU.
 
TAMIU would soon have an important inning in the 3rd, as the Dustdevils increased their lead to four. Sardelich started out the inning at the plate, only to get on base on balls. Capello would then come to the plate and single to left field, advancing Sardelich to second. Sophomore Brenda Parnin reached first base on a walk, making the bases loaded for Musset. Mussett had a sacrifice fly (RBI) out to centerfield, scoring Sardelich. Next up, Gallardo doubled down the left field line, scoring B. Parnin and Capello (2RBI). The Dustdevils ended the inning with three runs, two hits, and one left on base.
 
TAMIU and SWOS each scored one run in the 4th. TAMIU scored another two runs in the 5th, though SWOS recorded four runs in the bottom of the 5th to give the Dustdevils a scare, making the score 5-7 TAMIU.
 
The Rangers would not be able to score throughout the remainder of the game, as TAMIU added in two more runs in the 7th, taking the 9-5 win.
 
Mussett had a phenomenal game, as she went 3-3, with two RBI, and one run. TAMIU's pitcher Gallardo also went 1.000 on the afternoon with four RBI and one run. Freshman Alyssa Soneff and Sardelich also recorded RBI - two and one, respectively.
 
TAMIU's pitcher, Gallardo (1-2), recorded her first win of the season, pitching six innings on the day. Senior Sarah Johnson relieved Gallardo in the 7th inning.
 
The Dustdevils now have a record of 3-5 and will see a break in play for the next week. Next up, TAMIU will face Texas A&M University –Commerce for a doubleheader on Tuesday, February 17 on the road.
