Dustdevils Take Tarleton State into Extra Innings

LAREDO, Texas – The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils (12-14) and the Tarleton State Texanns (11-11) battled with each other in a total of 18 innings (9-9) Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader.

GAME ONE: Texas A&M International 1, Tarleton State 4

TAMIU and Tarleton State battled in game one, as they each scored one run in regulation innings – Tarleton State in the top of the 4th, and TAMIU in the bottom of the 6th - which led to extra innings to determine the win.

With the game tied at one, the teams put all their might into the extra innings. Both team's defense needed to be top-notch, especially since the extra-inning rule was in play (runner placed on second at the start of the inning). Offensively, both teams needed to go with the bats and score a run, or many, for the win.

The 8th inning was tight, as both teams moved the runner on second to third base, but neither was able to come through to put a run on the board.

The top of the 9th was a different story as the Texanns moved their runner to third on an infield play, and soon moved that runner home on a double by Tarleton's shortstop Delaney Wayland. Tarleton State would then get three more hits that inning, and score two additional runs to make the score 4-1 Tarleton.

TAMIU had a chance in the bottom of the 9th to match, but got caught up on two strikeouts and a ground out to end the game.

Tarleton State's pitching and defense held the Dustdevils to only four hits in game one, while the Texanns racked up eight hits.

Sophomore
Brittany Mussett went 2-3 on game one, as she currently leads the team with a .353 batting average, and a .600 slugging percentage. Also swinging at the plate was junior Chelsea Capello with a hit and senior Mariena Gallardo with a double on the afternoon.

Freshman
Brandi Giles carded the loss for the Dustdevils, as she entered the game in the 8th inning and gave up three runs in the top of the 9th. Despite the loss, Giles still holds the team's best era at 1.85 on the season.

GAME TWO: Texas A&M International 2, Tarleton State 3

The second game was dejavu, as the Dustdevils took the Texanns in to extra innings with a 0-0 score after the 7th inning.

Tarleton saw a chance in the top of the 8th when their player singled to right field and advanced the runner on second to third. Next up, their a Texann reached on a fielder's choice and hoped to score the runner on third, but shortstop
Brenda Parnin and third baseman Alyssa Acuna made a great play at third to get the lead runner out. Regardless of the great defense, Tarleton still came through and scored a run on an RBI single, making the score 2-1 Texanns.

TAMIU then saw an eye-opener in the bottom of the 8th and matched the score at one, as junior
Jessica Rivera grounded out to the pitcher for an RBI, tying the score at two.

Tarleton bounced back and scored two runs in the top of the 9th  off of a home run by Erica Menchaca.  TAMIU was unable to answer with two, falling just one short with one run in the bottom of the 9th.

Sophomore
Brittany Mussett went 2-4 in game two (.500 in both games), while sophomore Krissy Sardelich went 2-3 with a double and a stolen base. Also racking up some hits were sophomore Ashley Hight and freshman Alyssa Acuna with one each.

Tarleton State's Haley Freyman (9-6) marked the win for the Texanns, as it was her second of the afternoon (taking the win in the first matchup against TAMIU).

TAMIU's junior
Chelsea Capello took her first loss of the season, as she pitched three innings, and only allowed one run on four Texann hits.

Tomorrow TAMIU will return to conference play, with a doubleheader against Oklahoma Christian (8-6, 0-3 Heartland) at Dustdevil Field.
