Dustdevils Drop Doubleheader Against Arkansas-Fort Smith Friday Afternoon

LAREDO, Texas – Fielding errors hurt the Texas A&M International University Dustdevils (7-12, 0-5 Heartland) Friday afternoon, as they dropped two games against Heartland Conference opponent, the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith Lions (12-2, 5-1 Heartland).

GAME ONE: Texas A&M International University 2, UA-Fort Smith 6

The game was scoreless until the Arkansas-Fort Smith Lions came through in the 3rd inning and scored three runs (one earned, two unearned) off of a single to left center by the Lion's leftfielder, Josh Vanderpoo.

TAMIU came back swinging in the bottom of the 4th, where the Dustdevils scored two runs on three hits by sophomore
Daniel Cruz (2B) and junior Jeffrey Morgan, to cut the UAFS lead to one.

Though, in the top of the 7th, the Lions scored two more runs (one unearned) to increase their lead to three, which resulted in a 5-2 win over the Dustdevils.

TAMIU had one less hit than UAFS, but the Dustdevils' fielding errors consequently added three unearned Lions runs to the scoreboard in game one.

Despite the defensive errors, TAMU's offense was strong as junior
Reynaldo Adames, senior Jake Cardoza, and Cruz all went 2-3 in game one.

Senior
Jeremy Gonzalez (2-3) recorded the loss for the Dustdevils, only allowing one earned run in five innings pitched. Gonzalez also struck out six UAFS players at the plate.

GAME TWO: Texas A&M International University 4, UA-Fort Smith 5

The Dustdevils thought they sealed the deal as they had a 4-0 lead on the Lions in game two, until some late-inning errors led to five runs (three unearned) in the 7th, 8th, and 9th innings.

TAMIU got up on the board in the bottom of the 1st from a double by senior
Jake Cardoza, scoring senior Andrew Arteaga home to make the score 1-0 Dustdevils.

In the bottom of the 3rd, the Dustdevils were able to score two runs on two hits. UAFS's pitching also helped score TAMIU runs, as their pitcher walked two, and threw two wild pitches that inning.

In the bottom of the 5th, junior
Nathan Halas stepped up to the plate and slammed one over the right field wall for his first homerun of the season to increase the Dustdevils' lead to four.

Though, once again, the Dustdevils' defense was lacking, as they committed four errors in the last three innings, allowing the Lions to take the lead in the top of the 9th.

TAMIU's senior pitcher,
Jared Curnel, pitched a decent first six innings, as he allowed only two Lion hits, and no runs. Curnel also struck out six. Three Dustdevil pitchers followed Curnel's performance and allowed minimal hits. Senior Dino Cristiani recorded the loss for the Dustdevils, as he pitched 1.3 innings, and only allowed one hit and one earned run in the 8th inning.

UAFS's Kellen Smith (1-1) received the win for the Lions. The Lion's closing pitcher, Wayde Roth, recorded his second save of the day against the Dustdevils.

Tomorrow the Dustdevils will finish up play with the Lions at Unitrade Stadium with a 12 p.m. start time.
