Dustdevils Grab First Heartland Conference Win Against UAFS

LAREDO, Texas – The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils (8-13, 1-5 Heartland) notched their first Heartland Conference win on the third game in the 3-game series against the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith Lions (12-3, 5-2 Heartland) Saturday afternoon at Uni-Trade Stadium, winning 3-1.
 
TAMIU and UAFS each scored one run in the 1st inning and kept the score at tied for the next five innings of play.
 
In the top of the 6th inning, senior Armando Manrrique came in to pitch, relieving starting pitcher, senior Garrett Taggart, who had four strikeouts and allowed one run.
 
TAMIU didn't take the lead until the bottom of the 6th when sophomore Daniel Cruz hit a sacrifice fly out to right field, scoring senior Andrew Arteaga at the plate. Cruz's sacrifice fly lifted the Dustdevils on top with a score of 2-1.
 
The Dustdevils scored one more run in the bottom of the 8th to set the score at 3-1 with another hit and run by Cruz and Arteaga.
 
Arteaga led the team offensively, going 3-4 at the plate, with one double, two runs, and one RBI. Also hitting well against the Lions was junior Reynaldo Adames (2-3) with a double, and Cruz (2-3) with two RBI.
 
Senior pitcher, Dino Cristiani closed out the game, earning his third save of the season. Mannrique (2-1) recorded the win for the Dustdevils, allowing only two hits and no runs in 2.2 innings pitched.
 
Next up, the Dustdevils will face Houston-Victoria at home on Tuesday, Mar. 17 at 3 p.m.
