Dustdevils Fall Short on Day One of 3-Game Series against OC

EDMOND, Okla. – The Texas A&M International Dustdevils (8-15, 1-7 Heartland) dropped two games Friday afternoon as they played a doubleheader against the Oklahoma Christian University Eagles (15-9, 5-4 Heartland). 


GAME ONE: Texas A&M International 5, Oklahoma Christian 8

TAMIU dropped game one, as the Dustdevils had the lead in the top of the 5th, but OC utilized their chance to get back on top in the bottom of the inning, scoring four runs on two hits and two Dustdevil errors.
 
Overall TAMIU had eight hits, just one less than the OC Eagles. Though, TAMIU's defense wasn't up to par and accumulated three errors throughout the game, while the Eagles only had one which resulted in five unearned OC runs.
 
Junior Nathan Halas went 1.000 (2-2) on the day with one RBI. Sophomore Daniel Cruz went 2-3 in game one, and had two of the five TAMIU RBI. Senior Jake Cardoza, senior Andrew Arteaga, sophomore Erasmo Gonzalez Jr, and junior Michael Colorado all went 1-3 against the Eagles' pitchers. Cardoza and E. Gonzalez each added one RBI to the scoreboard.
 
Senior Jeremy Gonzalez (2-4) recorded the loss for the Dustdevils, as he pitched 4.2 innings and allowed six hits and seven runs (only two earned). J. Gonzalez struck out three Eagles while on the mound.
 
 
GAME TWO: Texas A&M International 1, Oklahoma Christian 2
 
After three scoreless innings, TAMIU got up on the scoreboard first in the top of the 4th as senior Andrew Arteaga reached the plate on a ground out by sophomore Daniel Cruz.
 
The Dustdevils kept their 1-0 lead until the bottom of the 8th inning, when they gave up a homerun by Oklahoma Christian's Cody Rosecrans, tying the score at one. TAMIU got themselves in a jam later this inning, as there was a runner on 2nd and 3rd with only one out. Though, a stunning performance by TAMIU's centerfielder, Arteaga, whom caught the next batter's fly ball, and got the runner out at home plate, after the runner had tried to tag up and take the lead.
 
In the top of the 9th TAMIU struggled to get a run, as it was a one-two-three inning for the Eagles defensively.
 
In the bottom of the 9th, two Eagle players reached the base on a hit by pitch and a walk. Next up, OC's Rosecrans pulled through with a single to left field to score the Eagle's winning run at the plate. Senior Marty Bigham (1-1) recorded the loss as he pitched 1.1 innings and allowed one run on one hit.
 
Senior Jared Curnel pitched the first 7.1 innings and only allowed one run on six hits, striking out five at the plate.
 
Junior Reynaldo Adames, Arteaga, senior Jake Cardoza, Cruz, and junior Jeffrey Morgan each picked up one hit for the Dustdevils.
 
Tomorrow the Dustdevils will finish up the 3-game series against the Eagles at 12 p.m.
