TAMIU Softball Starts the St. Edward’s Series with a 4-3 Win

AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils (19-15, 12-1 Heartland) beat the St. Edward's Hilltoppers (17-13, 5-5 Heartland) Friday afternoon at Diane Daniels Field, as they took the lead in the top of the 3rd (off a series of hits, walks, and a sacrifice fly) and kept it throughout the remainder of the game.
 
The Hilltoppers gave the Dustdevils a scare in the bottom of the 6th when a couple hits by St. Edward's girls rounded off a player home to score one run. But a routine fly ball to left field ended the inning. The Dustdevils' spectacular defense shut the Hilltoppers out in the bottom of the 7th, with putouts by sophomores Brenda Parnin and Brittany Mussett.
 
Junior Chelsea Capello led the Dustdevils going 3-3 at the plate, and walking once, with a 1.00 on base percentage in the game. Capello also scored one run for TAMIU. Junior Jessica Rivera went 1-3 on the afternoon, while Parnin and Mussett went 1-4. Parnin also scored one run, and had one RBI.
 
Senior pitcher, Mariena Gallardo (7-4) notched the win as she pitched a complete game and allowed eight hits and three Hilltopper runs.
 
Tomorrow the Dustdevils will complete the 3-game series with a doubleheader in Austin at 12 and 2 p.m.
