TAMIU Drops Doubleheader Against Texas-Permian Basin

ODESSA, Texas – The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils (7-10, 0-2 Heartland) dropped their first two conference games Saturday afternoon against the University of Texas-Permian Basin Falcons (11-4, 2-0 Heartland).
 

GAME ONE: Texas A&M International 1, Texas-Permian Basin 2
The Falcons scored one run in the bottom of the 3rd, and the Dustdevils scored one run in the top of the 7th as sophomore Alexander Cabezas reached home plate on junior Nathan Halas' RBI double.

With the score tied at one, the bottom of the 7th inning was a game changer for the Falcons as their second baseman D. Lee came through with an RBI single to win the game.

Going 2-3 in game one was sophomore Connor Belvin. Pinch hitter, Halas, had one at bat, and hit an RBI double for TAMIU's sole run. Junior Jeffrey Morgan also recorded a double on the afternoon.

Senior pitcher, Jeremy Gonzalez (2-2), was given the loss for the Dustdevils. Gonzalez pitched 6.1 innings, and only allowed two runs on four hits. Gonzalez also struck out six players on the afternoon.

 
GAME TWO: Texas A&M International 3, Texas-Permian Basin 6

In game two of the afternoon, the Dustdevils scored three runs on five hits, with three Falcon errors. Though, that wasn't enough to compete with UT-Permian Basin's six runs off of eleven hits and two Dustdevil errors.

TAMIU started the game in the 2nd inning, as a trio of Dustdevil players reached the base on three Falcon errors. Senior Jake Cardoza scored at the plate for an unearned run.

The Falcons then added on three runs on four hits in the bottom of the 3rd to take the 3-1 lead.

The game would then stay at 3-1 until TAMIU tied the game at three in the top of the 7th.  The Dustdevils scored two runs off three hits from Cardoza, sophomore Connor Belvin, and junior Jeffrey Morgan (RBI), and a sacrifice fly from sophomore Alexander Cabezas (RBI).

With the game tied at three, the Falcons managed to pull through in the bottom of the 7th scoring three runs on three hits, along with two Dustdevil errors. This would make the score 6-3, leaving two more innings for TAMIU to make a comeback. Though, in the last two innings, the Dustdevils were held to one hit, which resulted in the 6-3 loss over the Falcons.

Cardoza went 2-4 (.500) in game two, as he also scored two out of three TAMIU runs. Cabezas recorded two RBI, while Morgan went 1-3 (2B) on the afternoon.

Junior pitcher, Sammy Alvarado, received the loss in game two.

Tomorrow the Dustdevils will finish out the series with a single game in Odessa, starting at 1 p.m.
