TAMIU Faces Falcons in Sunday Afternoon Showdown

ODESSA, Texas – The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils (7-11, 0-3 Heartland) had trouble scoring runs against the University of Texas-Permian Basin Falcons (12-4, 3-0 Heartland) Sunday afternoon, as the Falcons took a 5-1 win over the Dustdevils.

UTPB took the lead quickly in the first inning, as they scored two runs on two hits.

The Falcons added one run in the bottom of the 2nd (unearned) and two more runs in the bottom of the 4th (both unearned) to make the score 5-0 Falcons. TAMIU committed one fielding error in the 2nd, and two (one fielding, and one throwing) in the 4th.

TAMIU's only run came around in the top of the 8th, as junior
Reynaldo Adames reached the base on a fielding error. Next up, junior Cody Perez singled through the left side. With two men on base, senior Andrew Arteaga came up to the plate and hit an RBI single up the middle, scorning Adames.

Arteaga went 2-3 on the afternoon, with one RBI. Perez went 2-4, while senior
Jake Cardoza, sophomore Connor Belvin, and junior Jeffrey Morgan each had a hit.

Senior pitcher,
Garrett Taggart (0-3) took the loss for the Dustdevils. Taggart pitched four complete innings, and allowed four hits and struck out two. Also pitching for the Dustdevils were senior Dylan Allen, junior Daniel Edmondo, senior Armando Manrrique, and senior Dino Cristiani who all together allowed no Falcon runs.

UTPB's pitcher, Chris Cano (3-0), was awarded the win for the Falcons, as he struck out seven Dustdevils players in his seven innings pitched.

Next up, the TAMIU baseball squad will take on another Heartland Conference opponent, the Arkansas-Fort Smith Lions, back in Laredo. Friday's doubleheader will take place at Uni-Trade Stadium, while Saturday's single game will be played at Jorge Haynes Field.
