Dustdevils Split with Lubbock Christian in Friday’s Doubleheader

LAREDO, Texas – The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils (15-21, 7-10 Heartland) split with the Lubbock Christian Chaparrals (20-18, 7-8 Heartland) on Friday at Unitrade Stadium.
 

GAME ONE: Texas A&M International 3, Lubbock Christian 2
The Dustdevils got on the board early, scoring three runs in the first three innings off runs by sophomore Alex Cabezas, senior Andrew Arteaga, and a solo home run by sophomore Connor Belvin.
 
Senior Jeremy Gonzalez (3-5) started on the mound for the Dustdevils, pitching five complete innings and only allowing two hits on two runs (both unearned). Gonzalez had a no-hitter going into the 5th inning, where he allowed his only two in that inning. Gonzalez struck out four Chaparrals while on the mound.
 
The Chaps scored their only two runs (unearned) in the top of the 5th, as TAMIU's first baseman and short stop committed errors.
 
TAMIU's defense and relief pitching held Lubbock Christian to no runs in the top of the 6th and 7th to take the 3-2 win over the Chaps. Sophomore Nick Perales pitched the top of the 6th allowing no hits and struck out one Chaparral batter. Senior Dino Cristiani came in to close the game out in the top of the 7th and didn't allow any hits and struck out one batter to accumulate his 6th close this season.
 
Leading the Dustdevils offensively was junior Jeffrey Morgan, who went 2-2 with a stolen base on the afternoon. Belvin hit his second home run on the season, going 1-3 at the plate with one of two TAMIU RBI's. Sophomore Daniel Cruz recorded the second RBI for the Dustdevils.
 

GAME TWO: Texas A&M International 7, Lubbock Christian 9
The second game of the night was a heartbreaker loss for the Dustdevils as TAMIU was on top 7-3 going into the 5th inning, but runs in the 5th, 6th allowed them to make the score 7-6 . From there, the Chaparrals scored three runs in the top of the 8th on two hits to take the 9-7 win over the Dustdevils.

TAMIU's had a stunning inning in the bottom of the 3rd as they scored four runs on four hits by junior Jeffrey Morgan, sophomore Alex Cabezas, senior Andrew Arteaga, and a double by senior Jake Cardoza. They scored an additional three runs in the bottom of the 4th on four hits and one Chap error.
 
TAMIU's bullpen struggled as they allowed the six runs for the Chaparrals to catch up and take the lead.
 
Senior Jared Curnel started on the mound, pitching five innings and only allowed four hits and four runs – three unearned from errors on the field by TAMIU's defense. Curnel struck out four batters in his pitching appearance.
 
Taking the loss for the Dustdevils, was sophomore Nick Perales (1-1) who pitched one inning and allowed three runs on two hits in the top of the 8th.
 
Leading the Dustdevils offensively in the second game was Cardoza who went 1-2 at the plate with a double, and got on base twice from walks by the Chaparral's pitching. Cardoza also had the team-high three RBI. Cabezas went 2-5 at the plate with two runs for TAMIU. Morgan went 1-3 at the plate with one RBI and a sacrifice fly. Also adding in RBI's for the Dustdevils was sophomore Erasmo Gonzalez Jr. and Arteaga. Gonzalez recorded a double on the night.
 
The Dustdevils will finish up their 3-game series against Lubbock Christian Saturday afternoon at Unitrade Stadium with a 1 p.m. start time.
