Dustdevils Fall to Newman in Saturday Afternoon Doubleheader

AUGUSTA, Kan. – The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils (15-23, 7-12 Heartland) dropped a doubleheader against the Newman University Jets (18-20, 8-12 Heartland) Saturday afternoon, falling behind 0-2 in the 3-game series.
 

GAME ONE: Texas A&M International 4, Newman 7
The Newman Jets took game one, as a powerful bottom of the 6th inning uplifted them on top of the Dustdevils, making the score 7-3 Jets. The Dustdevils tried to fight back in the top of the 7th, but only were able to get one run, giving Newman the 7-4 win.
 
TAMIU had the lead for the majority of the game, as they scored two and one run in the top of the 1st and 2nd innings, up until the 6th inning where Newman took over.
 
Offensively, each team had seven hits. Though, TAMIU had a few more players left on base throughout the entirety of the game, which hurt them in the long run after Newman scored five runs in the bottom of the 6th.
 
Four Dustdevils batted .500 on the afternoon. Sophomore Daniel Cruz went 2-4 at the plate with a team-high 2-RBI against the Jets. Senior Andrew Arteaga, senior Eric Moritz, and junior Jeffrey Morgan each went 1-2 on the afternoon, including a double by Moritz.
 
Three TAMIU players had sacrifice hits on the afternoon (sophomore Alex Cabezas, junior Nathan Halas, and Moritz).
 
Taking the loss for the Dustdevils was senior Jeremy Gonzalez (3-6) who pitched only allowed four hits on the afternoon in 5.1 innings of play.
 
 
GAME TWO: Texas A&M International 2, Newman 3
The Dustdevils took the lead in the top of the 2nd inning, and held it throughout the majority of the game, until the Jets came through in the bottom of the 9th inning and scored two runs to take the 3-2 win over TAMIU.
 
Senior Jared Curnel started on the mound for the Dustdevils and pitched 6.1 innings and only allowed one run, which was unearned. Curnel struck out five Jet batters on the afternoon. Relieving Curnel was senior Marty Bigham and sophomore Nick Perales, whom pitched a total of 1.2 innings and also did not allow any earned runs. Senior Dino Cristiani (1-3) came in to close the game out, and allowed the two runs in the bottom of the 9th, as he received the loss.
 
Offensively, sophomore Daniel Cruz led the way, as he batted 2-4 at the plate and scored one run for TAMIU. Scoring the other Dustdevil run was senior Jake Cardoza. Junior Nathan Halas went 1-4 at the plate, as he had a double against the Jets pitching staff. Senior Andrew Arteaga reached on base once, and tacked on a stolen base for TAMIU.
 
Tomorrow afternoon the Dustdevils will continue play with the Newman Jets in Kansas, with a single game scheduled for a 12 p.m. start time.
