Dustdevils Split with No. 14 Angelo State Sunday Afternoon

LAREDO, Texas – The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils (21-20) split with the No. 14 (#3 regionally) Angelo State Rambelles (28-11-1) Sunday afternoon at Dustdevil Field as they came up short in game one, and came through in game two with a powerful 3rd inning and remarkable defense throughout the remainder of the game to take the win in game two.

GAME ONE: Texas A&M International 2, Angelo State 5
The Rambelles started off game one with five unanswered runs from the Dustdevils in the first five innings, where the Dustdevils came through and scored two runs in the bottom of the 6th, falling short by three runs.

The Dustdevils had one last chance to take the win in the bottom of the 7th, but failed to as two TAMIU players struck out, and a ground out to the catcher ended the game on a short note.

Senior Sarah Johnson (8-3) started and ended on the mound for the Dustdevils, allowing 13 Rambelle hits, along with five runs. Johnson struck out three batters on the afternoon.

The Rambelle's pitching from Brandy Martlett (16-4) only allowed five Dustdevil hits in game one.

Freshman Brandi Giles led the Dustdevils with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the 6th scoring TAMIU's only two runs. She recorded her second home run of the season. Sophomore Brittany Mussett went 1-2 (.500) at the plate, and got on base an additional time from a base on balls.

Senior Mariena Gallardo, freshman Alyssa Acuna, and senior Sarah Johnson each went 1-3 at the plate with the remainder of the Dustdevils' hits. Freshman Alyssa Soneff saw two at bats, and added in a sacrifice fly for TAMIU.

GAME TWO: Texas A&M International 3, Angelo State 1
The Dustdevils powered through in game two on the afternoon as a stunning 3rd inning gave the Dustdevils the 3-1 advantage over the Rambelles.

The Rambelles got on board before the Dustdevils, as they scored one run on one hit in the top of the 2nd off a double by Angelo State's leftfielder, Madison Greenwell.

The dominant 3rd inning for TAMIU started out with a double by sophomore Krissy Sardelich, and soon after sophomore Anna Parnin reached base as she was hit by a pitch. The two runners advanced to second and third from a wild pitch, and advanced once again on a passed ball by the Rambelles' pitcher to put the Dustdevils up on the board to tie the game at one.

With A. Parnin on third, junior Chelsea Capello reached on base from a walk. Next up two singles from sophomores Brenda Parnin and Brittany Mussett scored A. Parnin and Capello at the plate for the 3-1 lead.

The remainder of the game was pretty routine, as the Dustdevils' pitching and defense were well played, and neither team was able to get up on the board to add on any runs.

The Dustdevils outnumbered the Rambelles in hits 7-3 in game two.

Freshman Delainy Thompson pitched the complete game for TAMIU, and only allowed three hits and one run from the No. 14 Angelo State. Thompson struck out three Rambelle players throughout the entirety of the game.

B. Parnin led the team offensively as she went 2-3 at the plate, and added in one RBI for the Dustdevils. Three TAMIU players batted .500 (1-2) against the Rambelles' pitching (Capello, freshman Alyssa Acuna, and Sardelich). Sardelich recorded a double, and also scored one out of the three TAMIU runs.  Leading the Dustdevils in RBI were B. Parnin and Mussett with one apiece.

The Dustdevils will finish up the third game of the series tomorrow afternoon at Dustdevil Field with a 12 p.m. start time.
