Dustdevils Split with Oklahoma Panhandle in Friday’s Doubleheader

GOODWELL, Okla. – The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils (22-21, 14-6 Heartland) split with the Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies (12-32, 4-16 Heartland) Friday afternoon.

GAME ONE: Texas A&M International 5, Oklahoma Panhandle State 6
The Dustdevils got on board early, as they scored five runs in the 1st and 2nd inning, including a 3-run homerun from sophomore Brittany Mussett in the top of the 2nd (her ninth of the season).

Though, the Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies had a dominant bottom of the 2nd inning, where they scored six runs off five hits and one Dustdevil error, dooming to the Dustdevils' in game one.

After a 6-5 score at the end of the 2nd inning, the score remained fixed as the pitching staff and defense shutout the remainder of the game with runs for both teams.

Senior Mariena Gallardo (7-6) pitched the first three innings for the Dustdevils, as she gave up six runs (one unearned) and five hits in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Gallardo struck out two batters during her time at the pitcher's mound. Freshman Delainy Thompson came in halfway through the game, and pitched the other three innings for the Dustdeivls, only allowing two hits and striking out three Aggies at the plate.

Offensively, Mussett led the way for the Dustdevils as she went a perfect 1.000 (2-2) at the plate, got on base twice from Oklahoma Panhandle walks, and had her 3-run home run in the top of the 2nd inning. Mussett currently leads the team in batting average, slugging percentage, and home runs with nine. Batting .500 on the day was freshman Brandi Giles, whom went 1-2 at the plate, and also accumulated a stolen base on the afternoon. Junior Chelsea Capello went 1-3 at the plate and scored two runs for TAMIU.

GAME TWO: Texas A&M International 7, Oklahoma Panhandle State 5
The second game of the afternoon was relatively close, as the Dustdevils and Aggies went back and forth, matching the same amount of runs in each inning, until TAMIU's top of the 4th lifted the Dustdevils over the Aggies for the last time of the game.

TAMIU started out the game with two runs in the top of the 2nd. Oklahoma Panhandle would come back and match that in the bottom of the inning to make the score 2-2. The same situation happened in the 3rd inning as each team scored two runs, making it a tie game at four after three innings.

TAMIU pulled away from the ties in the top of the 4th inning as sophomore Samantha Gutierrez and junior Chelsea Capello reached home plate on a single to left field by senior Mariena Gallardo. For the first time in the game, the Aggies were not able to match those two runs in the bottom of the 4th, giving TAMIU the 6-4 edge on the game.

The 5th inning remained scoreless, whereas the 6th inning was another matchup where the Dustdevils and Aggies each scored one. With one inning left of play, each team went scoreless in the 7th, resulting in a 7-5 TAMIU win.

The Dustdevils outnumbered the Aggies in hits, as TAMIU had 12, and the Aggies had seven.

Leading TAMIU with the bats was senior pitcher, Sarah Johnson, who went 3-4 at the plate with one RBI. Batting .500 on game two was Capello and sophomore Krissy Sardelich. Capello scored two runs for the Dustdevils, while Sardelich recorded an RBI. Gallardo had the team-high 2-RBI in the second game.

Johnson (9-3) tacked on the win for the Dustdevils, as she pitched a complete game and allowed five runs on seven hits. While in the game for TAMIU, Johnson struck out six Aggie batters.

Tomorrow the Dustdevils and Aggies will go at it again to see who takes the series. Game time is set for 12 p.m. at Aggie Field.
