Dustdevils Defense Determines Win against Oklahoma Panhandle State

GOODWELL, Okla. – The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils (23-21, 15-6 Heartland) defense dominated the Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies (12-33, 4-17 Heartland) Saturday afternoon, as each team had about the same number of hits, but TAMIU only allowed the Aggies to score one run to take the 6-1 win.

The Dustdevils scored one run apiece in the top of the 2nd and 3rd innings on hits by sophomore Anna Parnin and senior Sarah Johnson. TAMIU then had a powerful 4th inning, where they scored four runs on four hits to take the 6-0 lead against the Aggies.

The Aggies would score their only run in the bottom of the 5th, though that run was unearned as TAMIU's third baseman committed a throwing error.

Freshman Alyssa Soneff led the Dustdevils defensively, as she had a team-high six putouts and one assist. Leading the Dustdevils in assists was sophomore shortstop, Brenda Parnin, with three.

TAMIU's freshman Delainy Thompson (7-8) pitched six innings and took the win for the Dustdevils as she allowed no earned runs on eight Aggie hits. Senior Mariena Gallardo came in to close the game out in the bottom of the 7th, as she only allowed one hit.

Leading the Dustdevils with the bats was sophomore Brittany Mussett who went a perfect 3-3 and got on base for a fourth time with a walk. Mussett also had a double on the afternoon, and scored one run and led the team with 2-RBI.

A trio of Dustdevils batted .500 against the Aggies, including Johnson (2-4), Soneff (2-4), and A. Parnin (1-2). Johnson and A. Parnin recorded one RBI a piece, while Soneff and A. Parnin each recorded one run each for the Dustdevils.

The Dustdevils only have one more regular season 3-game series against Lubbock Christian next Friday and Saturday. Lubbock Christian currently leads the Heartland conference with a 17-3 conference record, just one game ahead of St. Mary's (16-4), and two ahead of the Dustdevils (15-6). The regular season finale will be a significant game, as the Dustdevils still have a chance to win the Heartland Conference regular season championship, and also will work to position themselves in the Heartland Conference Tournament which will be held the following weekend.
