TAMIU Tumbles in 3-Game Sweep against Newman

AUGUSTA, Kan. –Texas A&M International University (15-24, 7-13 Heartland) entered the final game of its 3-game series against the Newman Jets (19-20, 9-2 Heartland) at Augusta High School on Sunday looking to salvage a game, after the Jets had swept them in Saturday's doubleheader. Instead, the Dustdevils fell 2-14 in seven innings played.

TAMIU was outscored 24-8 by the Jets throughout the entirety of the series. In the final game, the Dustdevils only scored two runs off of eight hits and one Newman error. On the reverse side, the Jets scored 14 runs on 16 hits, and three Dustdevil errors (Cody Perez, Andrew Arteaga, and Jeffrey Morgan).

Senior pitcher, Garrett Taggart (2-5) took the loss for the Dustdevils, as he pitched 1.2 innings and allowed nine runs (four unearned) on seven hits. Junior Sammy Alvarado came in to relieve him, as he pitched 3.1 innings and did not allow any runs on three hits. Closing up the game for the Dustdevils was juniors Daniel Edmondo and Dylan Allen. Edmondo gave up five runs on five hits, as he faced five batters in the 6th inning.

Offensively, three Dustdevils batted 1.000 including Perez, junior Nathan Halas, and freshman Brandon Colorado (2B, R). Leading the Dustdevils in RBI was junior Michael Colorado, who went 1-2 at the plate and had 2-RBI. Also batting .500 on the afternoon was sophomore Robert Quintanilla and sophomore Aaron Navarro. Sophomore Alex Cabezas went 1-4 at the plate with a triple (his first of the season).

The Dustdevils only have two more weeks of regular season play. Next up, they will be taking on non-conference opponent, Our Lady of the Lake, Tuesday afternoon at Unitrade Stadium with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. Following that doubleheader, the Dustdevils will only have two more Heartland Conference 3-game series against St. Edwards (April 24-25) and St. Mary's University (May 1-2) left to be played this season.
