Dustdevils Split with Chaps in Last Regular Season Doubleheader

LAREDO, Texas – The Texas A&M International University (24-22, 16-7 Heartland) softball team split with the top-Heartland Conference seed, Lubbock Christian Chaparrals (35-12, 18-4 Heartland), Friday afternoon as they lost the first game and came back with a huge win in the second to put the Lady Chaps' Heartland Conference title on hold.

GAME ONE: Texas A&M International 2, Lubbock Christian 6
TAMIU struggled in game one, as they gave up a total of seven hits – four of them home runs, which led to the 6-2 loss against the Chaps. All of the runs scored by Lubbock Christian came off of home runs in the 1st, 3rd, and 5th innings.

Senior pitcher, Mariena Gallardo (7-7), pitched 3.1 innings, taking the loss for TAMIU. She gave up four runs on four hits, striking out one Lubbock Christian batter. Freshman Brandi Giles came in to close the game out, as she pitched 3.2 innings and only allowed three hits and two runs. Giles struck out three batters at her duration on the mound.

The Dustdevils scored their two runs in the 1st and 4th innings – one on a sacrifice fly by senior Sarah Johnson, and another on a series of hits from sophomore Brittany Musset and Johnson, followed by a sacrifice bunt by freshman Alyssa Acuna and a ground out by sophomore Krissy Sardelich.

Offensively, sophomore Brittany Mussett led the Dustdevils, going 2-3 at the plate. Batting .500 in game one was Gallardo and the other senior, Sarah Johnson – both going 1-2 at the plate.

Defensively, the Dustdevils only committed one error (which did not affect the score), and had 21 putouts. Johnson led the team with seven, while sophomore Brenda Parnin led the team with three assists.

GAME TWO: Texas A&M International 7, Lubbock Christian 1
The Dustdevils made a huge comeback in game two, as they worked to accumulate seven runs on eleven hits, and holding the Lady Chaps to one run and seven hits.

Freshman Delainy Thompson (8-8) posted her eight win of the season against the top-Heartland Conference seed team. Thompson pitched a complete game, only giving up the one run. Thompson struck out three Lady Chap batters on the afternoon.

The Dustdevils got the game going in the bottom of the 1st when junior Chelsea Capello advanced to third base on a hit by sophomore Brittany Musset. Senior Mariena Gallardo came through with a single through the left side, to score Capello at the plate.

The Lady Chaps evened the score at one in the top of the 2nd, but that didn't scare the Dustdevils. In the bottom of the 2nd inning, TAMIU came out and scored three runs to make it a 4-1 ballgame on five Dustdevil hits. They also added in one more in the bottom of the 3rd, making the score 5-1 Dustdevils.

The 4th and 5th innings were scoreless, where in the bottom of the 6th, TAMIU added on two runs to secure a 7-1 lead, off of a 2-run homerun by sophomore Brenda Parnin.

The Dustdevils shutout Lubbock Christian in the top of the 7th, therefore attaining the enormous 7-1 over the Lady Chaps.

Mussett performed with the bats, going 3-4 at the plate, making it 5-7 (.714) on the day. Musset also recorded one RBI on the afternoon. Also producing hits was Parnin who recorded her 6th homerun on the season, while going 2-4 at the plate. Parnin crossed home plate twice, while recording the team-high 3-RBI in game two. Gallardo went 2-3 at the plate with one RBI. Capello recorded a perfect 1-1 at the plate with a double, and a perfect 1.000 on base percentage as she also got on base three times from walks.

The Dustdevils will look to finish up their final game of the regular season tomorrow with an 11 a.m. start time. It is also senior day, and there will be a presentation starting at 10:45 a.m.
