TAMIU Splits with Rogers State in Doubleheader on the Road

CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils (13-19, 5-9 Heartland) split with the Rogers State University Hillcats (11-19, 3-11 Heartland) Thursday afternoon in a doubleheader at the Diamond Sports Complex.

GAME ONE: Texas A&M International 0, Rogers State 5
The Dustdevils lost game one against the Hillcats, as Rogers State outscored TAMIU 5-0 on nine hits and one Dustdevil error. TAMIU had trouble matching that as they weren't able to pick up any runs throughout the game on six Dustdevil hits and one Hillcat error.

Senior Jeremy Gonzalez (2-5) started on the mound for the Dustdevils, as he allowed four runs on six hits in the first 4.1 innings of play. Gonzalez closed the 1st inning out, but allowed two runs in the bottom of the 2nd.

In the bottom of the 4th, the Hillcats added one more run on a series of singles and a sacrifice bunt.

Senior Dylan Allen relieved Gonzalez in the 5th, as he pitched the remainder of the inning and allowed one run on two hits.

Freshman pitcher, Justin Diaz, closed the game out for TAMIU as he only allowed one hit in the bottom of the 6th.

TAMIU saw a couple chances to score in the 1st, 3rd, and 4th innings, but failed to excel, leaving two men on base in each inning.

Senior Andrew Arteaga led the Dustdevils with the bats in game one, as he went 2-4 at the plate. Seniors Jake Cardoza and Eric Moritz, along with junior Jeffrey Morgan each went 1-3 against the Hillcats pitcher.

GAME TWO: Texas A&M International 6, Rogers State 5
After a scoreless first game against the Hillcats, the Dustdevils turned it around in the top of the 5th inning in game two, as they scored four runs  on a single by sophomore Connor Belvin, and a 3-run homerun by sophomore Erasmo Gonzalez Jr.  to take the 4-2 lead.

The Dustdevils would then add to their lead in the top of the 8th with two runs on three hits by junior Cody Perez, senior Jake Cardoza, and a double by sophomore Daniel Cruz.

The Hillcats made the game close, as they scored two runs in the bottom of the 8th on a 2-run homerun, making the score 6-4 Dustdevils.

The bottom of the 9th was a scary situation for the Dustdevils, as they allowed two men to reach base on a walk and a throwing error by TAMIU's shortstop, junior Jeffrey Morgan. With only one out on the board, a Rogers State player singled to right field, resulting in the bases loaded. A hit by pitch scored one run, letting the Hillcats trail by only one run. Thankfully, the Dustdevils closed the inning out with a line drive to second baseman, junior Nathan Halas, and a fly out to centerfielder, senior Andrew Arteaga, to end the game with a victory.

Senior pitcher, Dino Cristiani, took the mound in the bottom of the 7th allowing three runs (one unearned), and record his fourth save of the season. Cristiani struck out two batters on the afternoon.

Senior Jared Curnel (2-1) received the win for the Dustdevils as he pitched 6.1 innings and only allowed two runs on seven hits. Curnel struck out four Rogers State players in his 6.1 innings pitched.

Cardoza led the Dustdevils offensively, going 2-3 at the plate, while scoring two runs and adding in 2-RBI. Perez went 2-5, scoring one run for TAMIU. Gonzalez led the team with 3- RBI, as he went 1-4 at the plate.

Tomorrow the Dustdevils will wrap up the 3-game series against Rogers State with a 1 p.m. start time.
