Dustdevils Record Two Wins in Rogers State Series

CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils (14-19, 6-9 Heartland) achieved two wins in the Rogers State University Hillcats (11-20, 3-12 Heartland) 3-game series, as they won 13-5 in the final game on Friday afternoon on a stunning 22 hits at the Diamond Sports Complex.

Six Dustdevils batted .500 or above on the afternoon, including leadoff hitter, sophomore Alex Cabezas, who led the way going 4-5 with two runs and 4-RBI. Senior Andrew Arteaga also led the team with two runs and 4-RBI as he batted .666 (4-6) against the Hillcats' defense. TAMIU's overall batting average against Rogers State was .478 (22-46). They also got on base four additional times throughout the game on walks.

Three Dustdevils earned doubles on the afternoon (Cabezas, Arteaga, and junior Nathan Halas). Cabezas also added in a sacrifice fly, while junior Jeffrey Morgan had a stolen base against Rogers State. Morgan and sophomore Erasmo Gonzalez Jr. led the Dustdevils in runs, with three apiece.

As the Dustdevils hammered with the bats, senior Garrett Taggert got his first win of the season. Taggert pitched five innings and only allowed four runs (two unearned) on six hits. Taggert also struck out one Hillcat batter in his performance.

The Dustdevils scored runs in five out of the nine innings played. One run was scored in the 1st as Halas doubled to left field to score Arteaga. In the 2nd and 3rd innings, TAMIU scored three and four runs, respectively, on a series of singles and one double by Cabezas, to take the 8-0 lead.

Rogers State shortened their deficit by scoring two runs in the 3rd and 4th innings, along with two more in the bottom of the 5th to make it an 8-4 ballgame.

After a scoreless 6th inning, the Dustdevils scored four runs in the top of the 7th on five hits, along with one in the top of the 8th to take the 13-4 lead. Rogers State had opportunities to close the gap in the bottom of the 8th and 9th but failed to do so, giving the Dustdevils the 13-5 triumph.

Next up the Dustdevils will play a non-conference game against the University of Houston-Victoria in Laredo at UniTrade Stadium on April 7 at 3 p.m.
