Dustdevils Drop a Doubleheader to the No. 7 St. Mary’s Rattlers

LAREDO, Texas – The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils (20-18, 13-4 Heartland) dropped to the No. 7 team in the country, the St. Mary's University Rattlers (30-7, 11-2 Heartland), Thursday afternoon at Dustdevil field under sunny skies and 90 degree temperatures.

GAME ONE: Texas A&M International 3, St. Mary's 7
The Dustdevils lost game one, as the Rattlers went with the bats in the 2nd through 4th innings, not giving TAMIU room to catch up and return with any hits to win the ballgame. The Rattlers won with their bats (13 hits), while the Dustdevils only had five in game one.

The Dustdevils and Rattlers both played exceptional defense in the 1st inning, as both teams had a 1-2-3 inning.

In the 2nd inning, St. Mary's and the Dustdevils each scored one run to tie the score at one to start the game off. St. Mary's scored their run off a single by catcher, Alex Rodriguez, through the right side after two players had already reached base on a double and single. TAMIU's freshman Alyssa Acuna scored a run after she had walked, stole second base, and scored on a Rattler right fielder error.

Though, in the top of the 3rd, the Rattlers scored four runs, on five hits and left two on base.

They added to their 5-1 lead in the top of the 4th with two runs on two hits, with one Dustdevil error. This made the score 7-1 Rattlers.

The Dustdevils tried to come back from the deficit, and scored two runs on three hits in the bottom of the 5th on a walk from junior Chelsea Capello, a single from sophomore Brittany Musset, and RBI-singles from senior Mariena Gallardo and freshman Alyssa Soneff, making the score 7-3 Rattlers.

Mussett led the Dustdevils offensively against 3-time Heartland Conference pitcher of the week, Vianna Gutierrez-Touchtone (17-3), going 2-4. Also hitting against Gutierrez-Touchtone was Gallardo, Soneff, and junior Jessica Rivera.

Gallardo (7-5) recorded the loss in game one, as she pitched four innings, and allowed seven runs on 10 hits. Freshman Brandi Giles came in to close the game up and pitched three innings, only allowing three hits and no Rattler runs. Giles also struck out two on the afternoon.

GAME TWO: Texas A&M International 5, St. Mary's 6
The second game was in the Dustdevils' hands going into the top of the 7th, as they were leading the Rattlers 5-1. Although, with two outs, two Rattler hitters (Nicole Sardelich and S. Wellmann) pulled through with a 3-run homerun and a 2-run homerun, respectively, to take the 6-5 Rattler win.

The Dustdevils got on top early as senior Mariena Gallardo hit a 2-run homerun in the bottom of the 1st, scoring herself and sophomore Brittany Mussett.

The Rattlers fought hard in the top of the 3rd inning to break senior pitcher, Sarah Johnson's, no-hitter, and succeeded as they got one hit.

TAMIU added to their lead in the bottom of the 3rd with singles from junior Chelsea Capello and sophomore Brittany Mussett, while sophomore Brenda Parnin and senior Mariena Gallardo both recorded doubles. The Dustdevils scored an additional run on an error by the St. Mary's shortstop.

In the 5th inning the Rattlers were able to score one run, but it looked as if that would be the ending result of a 5-1 Dustdevil win going into the top of the 7th. Little did the Dustdevils know, the Rattlers power hitters came through and ended TAMIU's chance of beating a No. 7 ranked team.

The Dustdevils had their chance to score one run to tie, or score two runs to take the victory, but failed as TAMIU's nine hole and two and three hitters grounded out, popped up, and flew out to left field to end the game.

Johnson (8-2) recorded the loss, as she gave up six runs on 10 hits. Despite her loss, she struck out four St. Mary's batters and had a no-hitter going into the mid-3th inning.

Gallardo led the team offensively as she went 2-2 from the plate and walked once to make it a perfect 3-3 on base percentage. Gallardo also scored two runs and added 3-RBI to the Dustdevils' scoreboard. Mussett followed her as she went 2-4 with one run and one RBI.

The Dustdevils will return in action against the No. 7 St. Mary's Rattlers tomorrow at Dustdevil Field with a 12 noon start time.
