Dustdevils Drop Friday’s Game against No. 23 St. Edward’s

AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils (16-26, 7-14 Heartland) dropped game one of the 3-game series Friday afternoon against No. 23 St. Edward's University Hilltoppers (33-10, 18-4 Heartland), as St. Edward's started strong and didn't allow the Dustdevils to catch up.

The Hilltoppers outscored the Dustdevils 12-5, while they only had two more hits than the Dustdevils throughout the entirety of the game. The reasoning behind the score was that TAMIU had a total of 10 players left on base, while St. Edward's worked to clear the bases and only left five on.

Leading the Dustdevils offensively was junior Jeffrey Morgan who went 2-3 at the plate. Also batting well was sophomore Daniel Cruz who went 3-5 with one RBI, and senior Andrew Arteaga who went 2-2, picking up his first home run of the season. Arteaga also recorded two RBI and two runs. Cruz and junior Cody Perez posted each posted doubles on the afternoon. Morgan and junior Nathan Halas had a sacrifice hit and sacrifice fly, respectively.

Senior Jared Curnel (2-2) marked the loss for the Dustdevils. Curnel pitched a total of three innings and gave up seven runs on eight hits, while striking out one. Freshman Justin Diaz and senior Marty Bigham relieved Curnel. Diaz pitched three innings following Curnel, and only gave up one run on three hits. Bigham pitched 0.2 innings and gave up two runs on no hits. Sophomore Nick Perales closed the game out and pitched 1.1 innings, allowing two runs (one unearned) on two hits.

Tomorrow the Dustdevils will pick up with St. Edward's and compete in a doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m.
